My current laptop is dying! I was going to buy an iMac, but MacRumors says it's a bad time to do so---updates are around the corner! What do the experts here think?

iMac, or MacBook? The iMac is due for an update fairly soon. The MacBook just got updated, so if you want another laptop, now is a good time to get one.
MacRumors concurs! In fact, the specs for the MacBook look better in everything but hard drive space---for less money, too.
You could spend your entire lifetime waiting. It's more about whether you really need the product now. If you do, get it. But if your laptop is dying, why are you looking at getting an iMac?
@tova: My laptop is almost never used as such; I keep it at the desk. I thought an iMac would be more powerful than the MacBook, but I see this isn't so....
iMacs and Mac Minis are both made with laptop components, which allow them to fit in small cases without fans, but also cost more and run slower. The only exception is that the hard drives on iMacs are desktop drives, which is why they're bigger.
If apple made a decent desktop-grade media center box, I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but for the price of a Mac Mini I could build one myself that's 3x as powerful.
@centropomus: Really? I'd like to see that, because I really don't think it can be done - not at the same price. What OS are you gonna run on it? And what would you plan on using it for?
@mikkoman: iMacs have faster hard drives, superior video cards, and big screens. While it's true the major components are pretty much the same as MacBooks, the Core 2 Duo is an incredible processor - far more powerful than most desktop processors that preceded it. Unless you're making a living with Photoshop or Final Cut, either one is all the machine you'll really ever need. For games, the iMac is going to be better (because of the graphics card). But I am a professional software developer and I replaced my desktop with a MacBook Pro and other than RAM, I have no complaints.
As for waiting - that's a game of tag you'll never win. No matter what machine you get, you'll always feel like something better came along RIGHT after you got yours. Just research what your needs are and pull the trigger. You'll be happy in the long run.
Wait til June. Mac'll add some nifty updates and waaaay better processors.

i'm no expert but it's about that time. i'd wait.
