I second Avenue Q. You don't even have to see the show to know what happens, it is literally told through the songs, which is awesome. Sweeney Todd is a good choice and the recent movie is an interesting adaptation, but leaves out some songs.
Spring Awakening is the newest Broadway hit. I've only listened to it a few times with my sister but I've thought it was awesome. It's very indie rock sounding, definitely a very modern musical.
Jersey Boys, Wicked, Chicago, Hairspray, Phantom - even Mama Mis was enjoyable (amazed they made a coherent story from the songs) I've seen/enjoyed all of them. Avenue Q and Spring Awakening I've heard is good but I have not seen them yet ... I did see Chorus Line and it was good but not great for me at least.
You can pick up discount tickets near the Marriott Marquis ...

I'm not sure how many you know, so my suggestions may be obvious. I love anything Sondheim, so I'd recommend Gypsy and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The latter is my favorite musical ever. And, for something more modern, Avenue Q? Though you likely know that one.
