What songs would you play at your wedding?
Replies
i can honestly say that i have never actually thought about this. but probably a really assorted selection of swing-y jazz.
@val: My best friend's niece's wedding (she's almost a second niece to me, I used to change her diapers!)... but for the sake of this question, YOUR wedding!
Also, after all the ritualistic insanity of the wedding I just attended, I've decided my wedding will be a total kegger. All the bridesmaids looked hot, but their feet were a bloody mess by the end of the night. My bridesmaids will wear Chucks or Dansko clogs or something cute but non-sadistic. Fuck that shit.
my wedding is to be officiated by my best friend. and he said that he gets to wear a dress, and kiss the bride first.
I'll let my wife do anything she wants at my wedding so long as we get an 80's cover band to play the reception.
Last song: Don't You Forget About Me
Okay, so getting back on topic. SONGS. Here's some of my list:
- Brickhouse | Commodores
- Baby Got Back | Sir Mix-A-Lot
- The Promise | When In Rome
- Mirror In The Bathroom | General Public
- Rock Lobster | B-52's

I honestly couldn't tell you one song that was played at my reception other than our song. Wait, there was YMCA. I was just glad the hard part was over. :D Now, I would request all my favorite songs, and any DJ that didn't have all of them in his or her library would not be hired. Maybe for our 10th anniversary bash... :)

@Triangles: Ah, yes, sorry, I wasn't clear. What wedding *of mine*??
@triangles, why not Artichoke by Cibo? that one is the romantical one.
I, for one, went through a 2-year period where I went to a wedding every two months or so. And so I have opinions:
Wedding DJs suck so much ass they create positive space out of an anus. Seriously, if I wanted to hear the same shitty music I had to endure during my high school dance days, I'd travel back in time to that awful period and re-live it. Or, I'd hang out at a sports bar on a Friday night. For real. Fuck you Mr. wedding DJ.
Bands are the way to go. If you need music to be played between sets, then get the ol' ipod out and put on my play list of rad music. The band would be a jazz band capable of playing the classics as well as jazz fusion stuff from the Seventies... and/or some soul would be good too.
but the first dance song would have to be decided by me and my partner of course. With my college honey, we thought having "All Mine" by Portishead be our song and that would have been radical... another GF and I thought "Little things" by Lamb. Another good Lamb song would be "Goreki"
yes, no one would like any of the music played at my wedding....
SIGH!
@Jesse: I TOTALLY agree with you about "Artichoke," but it's a bit sparse and minor-keyed for a wedding. It would certainly make it onto a mixtape for a special someone though. (In fact, it already has... twice. :)
I think I have to find the girl first to decide what we would do, but I like the idea of the band things DJ's just kind of suck and have about as much taste in music as wearing a sock for underwear.
I'm finally reading through all your comments now...
@libi: Hello! The best friend officiant sounds like it'll be neat. One of my best friends walked across stage in drag at our undergrad grad... presented himself as "Cookie Chanel."
@ilikedginger: Weird Al will be an interesting choice and highly danceable depending upon the song. I had friends who contemplated choreographing their first dance to Michael Jackson's Beat It and having their groomsmen and bridesmaids be their gang members in the back.
@beckteria: omg, THE CURE! Genius choice. I think I'll pick Modern English's "I'll Stop The World And Melt With You" except it's being used in a shit ton of commercials right now which sorta irks me. Even the Nouvelle Vague version is getting overplayed. I'll rethink this... there are many other good Cure songs.
@makeart: Since it'll be a kegger, I'm sure it will be open-invite. :) If not, I'll podcast the music at least so others can dance with us.
@Val: PSH! C'mon, dude, what wedding of MINE? I'm sooo not even there yet. :)
@jesse: May I nickname you "Minor Keyes" from now on?
@Geoduck: [I actually laughed out loud.] Yes, true... I just seriously hope there aren't men walking around with socks on their dicks when they aren't appearing on album covers.
@Triangles- I KNOW! one of the things i love about the cure is no matter how many times you here a song at awedding, on the tv, in a shitty movie.... you still love them!
[btw, I made a playlist of all the songs I listed above (by me) and it's so effing rad that I've been dancing around for the last hour. "Eple" is playing now... *chair dance*]
Hm. Just saw this thread.
The thing about wedding DJs is, they have to cater not just to your tastes, but the family's -- or, should I say, families. That's why the playlists are often so soft. I'll have to think about tunes I'd want for mine, though.
@ABoyNamedArt: Yeah, too much compromise can totally dilute the experience. Ultimately, I think the bride and groom should pick what *they* like (as Jesse seems bent on doing), but with an ear towards making sure those choices cut across generations and genres, perhaps. Most people have eclectic tastes, thank god, so this usually isn't such a problem.
i've said it before, i'll say it again: "it's only time" by the magnetic fields.
<3<3<3*sigh*<3<3<3

I was at a wedding this past weekend and was hugely disappointed with the songs the DJ chose. I don't just want the "first dance" music, I also want the stuff you expect people to jam to on the dance floor.
