If it takes memory cards, splurge a little for the mid-range ones. They're a lot faster than the low-end ones. The high-end ones tend to be a rip-off.
If it uses Secure Digital, you should be good with a cheap class 6.

I would go for a Canon they are super nice, pretty durable and take pretty pictures! The one I like is the Canon Power shot SD1100IS its relatively fair priced around 250.

I have a canon power shot sd1000 (or some number) also. It's nice and small. And I got it on amazon for under 200.

if you're looking at p&s cameras, the canon digital elph (go for the 7.1mp) is a really nice one.
