Things 9 year olds like
My nephew is turning nine years old, and his birthday is this weekend. (I don't know how this could have happened. Just a week ago, he was four.) As far as I know, he likes gun and hunting, but I feel like that theme will be overdone at the party. His dad is/was a fireman, and he was pretty into that when he was younger. What the hell do I buy a nine year old kid?Replies
4th grade. Hmm...what was I doing in 4th grade?
Is he at all artistic? Does he like music? Does he collect anything?
Legos are almost always a pleaser. Do you know what else he's into? Reading, movies, sports? that sort of thing.
I guess the only people that are into ninja turtles now are in their 20s.
I gave the whole group of kids books for Christmas and they hated me. The chemistry idea is good!
Other interests, I have no idea. He's a pretty cool kid, but sort of has tunnel vision on the gun/hunting thing, thanks to his dad.
i say something like legos or something you build, too. one thing about building toys is that he can make it about guns if he wants, but it doesn't HAVE to be about guns.
Pixar movies are great move for that age in my opinion.
...or maybe since he likes hunting so much, give him a copy of "Bambi." :-)

Books. Science stuff. Books that incorporate sciencey stuff.
This series of books are really frickin' rad (if I do say so myself -- I worked on the covers), and are totally geared for his age bracket.

And you can also get him his first chemistry set and that kind of stuff.
