Possible new GT! Homepage design. Thoughts?
http://goteaminternet.com/lab/public.phpI think I might make the links and the essays look like the topic area. and I think each little content block needs a little headline. And each type could link off to a page of just that type.
Keep in mind that this is just an experiment. This is not the final design. This is just a sort of design direction.
But uh, what do you think?

Hmmm....
1.) It would need tightening up between blocks
and
2.) I like the individual components, and think maybe half that many would be okay, but right now it is just WAY. TOO. MUCH. Overwhelming, even.
I like the challenge portions, definitely. I have tons of goofy photos to post, but it's nice to see the challenges all in one spot.
It's functionally a lot clearer, but not so pretty. I'm all for sorting out like content into its own units, but I think the look of it can stand further refinement. It would also be cool if we could choose to leave certain content modules open or closed (for example, if people don't like the photo feed, etc.), or otherwise modify the layout. Will we be allowed to skin?
i don't know where else to ask this question.
i tried to change my profile photo by going to the profile editing page, choosing the jpg file to upload, and hitting "update my profile"
it didn't change...
is there a delay or am i doing something wrong? or is this a bug maybe?
i just found the right thread for that question...
nvm & sorry plz.
What's that second section for? The unlabeled one? Is that your team's posts? If not, it ought to be. I like it a lot, but I think the public posts look a little odd down there after all that horizontal blocking.
A couple of thoughts- take them with a grain of salt or an entire mine if you want:
- The header section under the main tabs takes up WAY too much room. At 1680 x 1050, I have to close all my toolbars in FF (google, web dev, etc.) to see anything past the challenges.
- For the popular topics, the yellow text at the bottom of each thread doesn't have enough contrast against the white background on a PC (at least in my opinion).
- I'm actually pretty much okay with the pictures section, though I've never been a fan of whatever library you use to resize the images. I see a good deal of distortion and graininess in the thumbnails (more so than with a lot of other sites).
- I probably shouldn't have to hit Page Down twice to see "Site News"
- It feels like there's a bit too much whitespace between content sections. On that note, (and this is just an idea) either have some kind of links at the top to content sections or allow section collapsing via javascript. Too much scrolling on a homepage = failURE.
Don't get me wrong, it's a step in the right direction. I like the clearer dividing of content sections, but prepare for a earful if you ask me for "thoughts" on a site design. I do this for a living too. (^_-)
i like the idea of a logo contest.
it's one i would never enter, of course. but i would like to be a judge.
or would we do it the "democractic" way, by vote?
Like others have said, it's going in the right direction. I like the challenges at top and I like the bi-column below... I'm not feeling the pictures section at all... and I'm not sure if it's final, but then I see another list of stuff so not sure why that's there...
While I think the challenges could be broken out like that, I think the rest: pics, links, essays and topics should still be rolled into one as a "feed" of stuff. Maybe having icons in adition to the color codes (which I still don't get) to distinguish the types... and of course a way to filter by type; but for default page load... I think a feed of stuff the way it is now is awesome and works.
that's my buck-fiddy.
i like it, but it's also too much on the page. i like the challenges and the photos.. i think the challenges shouldn't be first, though even though they're awesome..
do we have a function where you can see all the posts only from that day? like if i was on my page and clicked march 17, 2008, i'd see all the things i posted on that day? i didnt think we did, but maybe there's something i'm missing?
It's a vast improvement! I like the idea of grouping the photo challenges together.
As well as the essays and topics.
However, something about the layout is unappealing, and I can't put my finger on it... Maybe I feel like I would be missing things? Especially because the time/date of the original post isn't listed, and I don't know how old or new something is?
Also, I hope there would still be a way to toggle between team view/public posts.
@Mizzchelle - yes, this is only for the PUBLIC posts page, not for the team area.
I like the general idea.
I'd like to see how a 4-column layout might work out. It might be hard to pull off without overly-scrunching the width of the columns, but I think it would be a great format for scanning through loads of content.

I think I like it better.
I can see more without scrolling through a lot of the pages.
I say "thumbs up Ben!"
