New OBGYN Guidelines stir ethic, legal debate
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88552296&ft=1&f=3New OBGYN Guidelines state a doctor is not required to administer or perform life ending medications or proceedures (abortion, morning-after pill) if they personaly disagree with it, but they also may not be required to refer their paitent to a doctor who will. Said one, "I'm not going to refer someone to a hit man to put to death someone that's inconvenient in their life." Charming.

yes, because all women who choose abortion only do it because the fetus is merely an inconvenience. *eyeroll*
he went on to say, "Well, unless it's one of the nurses and I'm the father. Or they're a relative. Or rich. That's different."
Well, on the one hand, don't go into a line of work if you don't enjoy some of the tasks you may have to do. On the other hand, if you run your own practice, by all means, do whatever the fuck you want. It'll come back around to bite you in the ass when your clientèle decides they don't like your politics.
Of course, I live around DC. If one place won't perform an abortion, I'm sure another will. You live in Bumfuck Alabama and your choices are somewhat more...limited.
I agree that the doctors shouldn't *HAVE* to refer you to someone.
I'm pro-choice, but I don't approve of abortion. I'm not sure anyone actually "approves" of abortion, though. Abortions are shitty, but sometimes people feel like they have no other choice. I'm not going to condemn them for that.
So while I agree that the doctors shouldn't be required to go against their moral judgment, I think they should at least care enough about the patient to refer them to someone who won't fuck things up worse.
I don't want to hear about people sticking hangers up there or flooding it with soapy water.
that would really suck if you lived in a small town where it would be hard to find an obgyn willing to perform abortions or if you needed a referral to get it covered under insurance.
can they at least be required to warn women up front that they are going to be dickheads about it so women can take their business elsewhere if they so choose?
The sad thing is that this state of affairs does not just extend to abortions. It also extends to pharmacists and prescriptions, birth control prescriptions in particular.
Because, you know, the ONLY use of birth control pills is as contraceptive (*cough*acne, endometriosis,menorrhagia*cough*)...
@corey: i actually LOST a friend because i said i was "pro-choice/anti-abortion" and when i tried to explain how i felt, the same way you feel, she said she couldn't talk to me anymore.
@acidflowers: I found the seemingly best way of explaining this position is:
"I believe there is a place and a time for everything, including abortion. The place is 'not my body' and the time is 'not in this lifetime'."
That tends to make people shut up and think, and I can honestly say nobody has tried to push the subject further with me, or become upset about it.
@acidflowers: That's part of the problem with generalizing with commonly accepted terms. People will take it a certain way that they understand it to be without hearing more explanation. But then again, a lot of people are very closed-minded and aren't open to hear other's opinions.

While I don't disagree with them having that choice, I also see how this could cause problems.
