Although I really do think you should be able to make people *outside* of your team compete in challenges to become part of your team. This would make the whole team concept nicely elitist and competitive, and would give the site a whole new genre of activity. (Similar to thumbing and starring people, but more complex and interesting.)

@mordant - you will be able to use the challenges for whatever you want. If you want to hold auditions for your attention because you have delusions of grandeur, that is awesome! some of us are elitists, and some of us are just better than everyone else.
