UNPOPULAR OPINION: Inglourious Basterds is not that good.

I can't go that far. It has nothing in it that I would enjoy, so I will not see it.
Ethan you should read my favorite cranky critic Jonathan Rosenbaum. He hates everything! He is also building an indictment against Tarantino and his film.
I think there is a review out there if you Google for it, but I haven't seen it on his personal site.
Rosenbaum even hates Star Wars and Indiana Jones! That's fine with me since his reasoning is sound and his writing is so good.
I found some moments in the movie to be sheer genius...at other times I was wondering why the heck these two characters were still talking. The conversations just didn't pop like in some of his other movies.
I don't think any kids who will see it will actually GET the irony of the whole concept and just leave thinking YEAH GO JEWS, FUCK NAZIS! I am also disturbed because at work my thirty three year old manager described the movie as "Funny".... THAT IS IT. I do not think that is the correct word to describe the movie as a whole. Was there funny parts? Yes. It basically was a fictional , at times, humorous take on a war. I also do not get why this whole story line with Hitler's death needed to be made up! People are stupid and now not only will people leave the theater thinking the jews kicked ass and that was the whole point of the movie, but that Hitler's and the war's demise happened the way it did on screen. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't exceptionally good.
Its not that unpopular of an opinion. The reviews are really mixed. I agree with jas a bit, there were parts I enjoyed thoroughly, others not so much, overall I'd say it was "ok"
I enjoyed it. I find it both interesting and amusing to see Tarantino take elements of various genres and blend them into the type story where they would not otherwise fit, and also because I find a lot of what he does very playful. I didn't go in expecting a serious war movie, or a movie with any great historical accuracy - I went in expecting Tarantino, and that is what I got.
ALSO, I think I read somewhere the opinion that there was "too much dialogue," but I did not find that to be true. There was plenty enough to get a sense of the characters (none of them are deeply dug into, to be sure, but you don't want to get too attached to someone that's going to die by the end of the movie, anyway) and see where the plot was moving, but not so much as to distract from the building suspense.
89% on rotten tomatoes reviews are certainly NOT mixed.
I guess it's what you were expecting going into the movie. I hate how Tarintino (or the people doing the marketing of his films) go on and on about "oh this is his spaghetti western homage" or "oh this is a modern version of naziplotation" or "man on a mission dirty dozen type films", it's a talking heads dialog driven movie and I LIKE those kinds of movies.
The dialog pops as usual but I think it's particularly amazing how it continues to maintain its pace even in french and german. I really do love how 60% of this movie is subtitled, it's a subtle thing but having the brits act like brits and the french act like french and the gemerans act like germs and the americans act like AMURICANS, though in broad stroing caricatures, adds a lot to the movie. I think someone mentioned the whole "ed harris as a nazi" thing before in other movies and it does make a big difference, it helps create the right level of suspension of disbelief to accept this ludicrous story.
I think the movie does a great job of creating tension through dialog and conservation of motion even though it's blatantly obvious what the outcome of this movie is going to be. Every moment in the movie is tense, like a powder keg ready to explode and at the same time barely anything happens except a few choice words and subtle actions.
Plus if nothing else Christoph Waltz is fucking AMAZING.
@twigby - yeah he absolutely was. he was outstanding. if he doesn't get nominated for that performance its a shame.
Yeah, but Rotten Tomatoes counts any Joe Schmoe who chooses to review a movie and vomit it on the internet. People on the internet generally love everything, so it's worthless to me. Metacritic has it at a 69%, and that's among critics. That I can agree with.
I don't think the dialog popped this time, I'm sorry. I thought it got long-winded and boring. Instead of sitting there thinking WOW I LOVE THIS DIALOG HOW WITTY, I found myself wondering when the scene was going to move along. I knew there were brilliant moments on the horizon, and I didn't feel like waiting for them. Waltz is great, I would agree. Pitt got tiresome, though. So meh.
Meh.
@ethan - the only point i TOTALLY disagree with you on is PItt. i actually thought there wasn't enough of the basterds shown in the movie. i thought for a movie entitled inglourious basterds they showed the other story lines a lot MORE.
I would agree with that. Brad Pitt's character is a little overly CHARACTER and unrefined at that, but there wasn't such a huge amount of him in the movie that I was completely fed up with him at any point. I would have liked a little more of the other Basterds, though, Especially guy who was on Freaks and Geeks, because he is just adorable.
yeah but it's not suppose to be witty, you expect 70's foxy brown references in nazi occupied france? I think it worked well at being a moody, tension building movie. Agree to disagree I guess.
I enjoyed it very much, but found some typical Taratino things really annoying and I really think he should edit them out and stop doing these things. They are not creative, they are annoying like an art school kids first film.
* 3 fonts opening credits. no.
* Samuel L. Jackson 5 seconds worth of narration for only 2 times in the film: jarring, annoying and not needed
* the whole "blending" of genres was about as subtle as youtube mashups done by 15-year-olds. They were weak and at times annoying.
But if you understand any German, there was some hilarious subtexts and I'm betting he has some co-writers for those scenes.

yeah you're dum
