GUYS do we think this dress is formal enough for a grad ball, or not? i find overly formal dresses really boring..
Replies
hmm i think it's not formal by itself but you could probably dress it up. either way its REEEEEALLY cute!
YEAH EXACTLY i reckon i could make it more dressy, i have killer heels which basically outshine everything else anyway
also this is LITERALLY the only dress on topshop.com i really enjoy, i am not into summery prints and they are ALL OVER THE PLACE.
i'll seeeeeeeeee, ugh it prob won't be in the actual shop anyway, this is why i hate topshop
I am about the last person you'd want to ask for fashion advice...but I can totally see this looking terrific on you.
It IS adorable, but, yeah, on its own its a bit carefree for a formal occasion.
BLAHHH i'm so rubbish at formal stuff. this is the kind of thing i'd wear going out dancing or whatevs, and i'm pretty reluctant to get something i'll only wear twice. hmmmmmmm
i wish i lived in the days of parasols. AT A PUSH i would wear this i suppose but it is not very 'me' and i'd be terrified that someone else would turn up in the exact same thing
Maybe just have Chris wear one of those fake-tux tee shirts. You'll look fantastic by comparison.
HAHAHAHAHAA.
chris seems to think it's not strictly black tie but i can't find such a statement anywhere...
OOF okay no the second dress is not particularly MORE formal than the first, and its not nearly as cute :C :C :C
honestly i think with fancy shoes and a nice bracelet or something, the first dress would look fantastico!
That second dress seems more Michelle Obama than kirsty! in my opinion.
Though not particularly like either.
I agree with Celisse 100%. I like the black-and-white dress more visually, and the second dress isn't really more formal-looking.
(Repeating previous disclaimer: I am an idiot and should not be trusted at any cost.)
if someone questions it just respond by saying "OH I'M JUST BEING KIRSTY!"
INTERESTING. i think the second one could look a lot more formal pretty quickly, with like a tan belt and some fancy bangles. but yeah i get what you guys are saying.
So, like, I'm looking at the link for the second dress and my flaming ass homo co-worker walks by (this is not an insult - he totally is a flaming ass homo) and he's all, like, "Is that a dress?"
"...Yeah>"
Throws hands up, walks away while rolling eyes. "Okaaaaaaay."
Whatever. Like a straight dude can't look at dresses online in the middle of the workday without being weird.
GUYS IF ANY OF YOU CURRENTLY ON GTI CAN BE BOTHERED LOOKING AT DRESSES FOR ME, GO HERE http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=19551&storeId=12556&categoryId=151405&parent_category_rn=42344&langId=-1&top=Y
i realise this is no one but just thought i'd offer. i have looked at tons of other high street sites and i am so BORED by all the dresses, ugh i hate hate hate hate hate hate formal wear. and summer clothes. i'm just rubbish when it's not winter.
I'm probably not good at looking for dresses since I suffer from being male and grumpy. Anything I pick is likely to be black.
Looking through TopShop's dress selection, none of them are particularly formal. There were a few, but when i clicked through and saw them on the mannequin, they were WAY too short. Eeks!
I think that's definitely weddingish. But not a very exciting dress. It could probably be worn to the grad ball thing too, with a sweater/jacket/something.
ALTHOUGH I'm really not the best person to be making these kinds of statements. I don't dress fancily very often. But I'm really bored right now.
I think you could wear the first one you posted though, the black&white. It is really cute and rewearable. Maybe for the wedding wear some colored accessories or somethinnnng, to make it more...festive?/summery.
I think we can all agree that the first one you picked is the kirstiest.
Given the parameters you want, I kind of like this one: http://tinyurl.com/l8k74e
Guess it depends what colour you want to go with your heels, of course.
sosane: yeah i considered that one, i think a dress like that could be made a bit more edgy quite easily which is something i'm always up for. it's sliiiightly over my ideal price range though and if i'm gonna spend that much i'd like it to be on something i'd wear a lot. so HMM.
it's more the grad ball than the wedding i'm concerned with in terms of formal potential, my wedding invite's just for the ceremony and evening reception (not the meal) so i think dress 1 would be fine for that.
moose elaine: argh, i know! everything's super short right now, definitely. and yeah, topshop only really turns out fancy dresses in the winter for christmas parties and stuff, i would've thought it'd have more potential for summer events but not this year, it seems.
you DID, -j, and i love that you did! thank you to eeveryone for your help so far.
I actually think the second one you posted looks more dressy, but I like the first stripey one better--and you're right, jack up the heels and big ass jewelry and you'll be fine. I think that purple one would look buuuurrtiful on you and if you want to tough it up just put a big honking black belt on it.
I can no longer buy dresses or skirts that are supposed to be short online because they are always up to muh butt.
ahhh jubles i was hoping you'd weigh in! yeah, i think if i can find the miss selfridge one in the shop it might be a winner, it'd probably be the easiest to accessorise with as well. i wanna go and check all of these out NOW but i must wait til saturday.
also, river island is disgusting, i thought it might have got better since the last time i checked but NO
i am looking i am looking
but i think for all of them so far you've got to get some awesome accessories going on and you will look smashing. alsooooooooooooooooo just remember that for a wedding you might want to go a weeeeeeeeee bit longer than you normally would (we just went through this whole thing with one of my best friends trying to find a dress for a wedding. it took weeeeeeks!)
but i think with jubilee helping you IT WILL ALL BE FINE!
(also purple one is my favourite so far for sure-- i really, really like the stripey one but i think the others you could dress up a bit more)
YES omg i realise the wedding length conundrum but this season is making that one particularly tricky. the purple one looks like it could be of a decent-ISH length, even if it isn't it tends to help that i'm a midget.
sigh i love the first one so much but a. the more i think about it the more i reckon it'd be quite HARD to bling up, in some respects and b. SIGH MAYBE I SHOULD JUST ACCEPT THAT I HAVE TO BE SUPER FORMAL AND NEVER WEAR THIS DRESS AGAIN
i dunno- i feel i can at least speak for the wedding aspect and say that i could wear any of them to that, because a. i'm not going to all of it and b. i worked at weddings and functions for 2 years and i'd say only very occasionally did younger girls wear anything more formal than that. the grad ball is more of a mystery, but i think all but the first could work for that depending on accessories.

i've only just found out i'm going to chris's grad ball on the 1st of july, but i've been looking at dresses all week cos i'm going to a wedding at the end f july anywayy. i thought this would do for both but my mum's making me DOUBT
