WHAT IS A WHISKEY SOUR PLEASE
-j: like a white russian! i've been craving white russians all day and i dunno why. my favourite bar in glasgow does 'em for £2 24/7, AMAZING
oof mojitos make me sad :C :C :C I WANNA LIKE 'EM BUT I CAN'T. cos theyre gross :C
a whiskey sour is just whiskey, lemon juice and some sugar, i think, so basically whiskey with lemonade? i dunno, I LIKE IT
question: am i supposed to like, drink while i'm on the hawtline? is that some sort of tradition?
Sour mix is very different depending on where you are. Sour in Milwaukee and Chicago is a soda made with Lime and Grapefruit. In some parts it has egg, sugar and lemon. Boston area sour is a lot like margarita mix.
monster radio man: i second the cider. one of the first warm days of the summer was spent on a hill in a huge park drinking strongbow from the bottle. AMAZING. although when circumstances allow i mix it with blackcurrant diluting juice
wait WHAT? where have you had buckfast before? i thought it was strictly scottish.
my favourite bar ALSO does glasses of buckfast for £2, which is clearly very classy. when i was entertaining some north americans a couple of weeks ago they were pretty fascinated with it.
I avoid Strongbow, if I can. It's the only thing they serve in pubs around here. But the LCBO has Bulmers, Stowford Press, Blackthorn, Growers, Cracked, Magners, Gaymers, as well as Rekorderlig, a Swedish berry-flavoured pear cider.
oh i love strongbow just cos it's so cheap. it's like £2.50 for a 2 litre bottle. i prefer magners for the taste, and pear kopparberg.
@kirsty! It's popular in Ireland. When I lived there it would always be the last resort at parties.
"So the beer, whiskey, cider and vodka are gone? OK, let's start on the buckfast."
hahaa, that's amazing. buckfast is so deadly, i've only ever had sips of it but most of my boymates drink bottles of it BEFORE we go out and it ruins them. i dread to think what i'd be like if i developed that habit.
@joe - yeah the sour mix i had tasted back east was more like a margarita or tom collins mix kinda.
Don't quote me on this but I think Stronbow and Bulmer's is the same. If I watched RTE (Irish TV) I'd see an advertisement for Bulmer's but when I'd watch the BBC I'd see the same ad with a Strongbow label clearly cgi'd onto the bottle.
totally jumping on the strongbow bandwagon, theres a pub down the street that has it. makes me happy.
@kirsty! It's the UK/Irish version of Malt liquor here. Used the same way for the same purposes.
The cheapest drink in my Ireland days was some French cider that came in 3 litre plastic bottles for about 6 Euro. It tasted ok and towards the end you didn't care much.
@kirsty! Maybe that was it.
skanko: oh that's cute, is it on tap? i wish you could get CANS of strongbow in pubs. i love the cans.
@kirsty! Actually, you are right; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulmers_(Ireland)
@kirsty! - yes. i've never had it out of cans, although the 2 liter bottle was quite convenient.
skanko: the 2 litre bottle is basically the only thing that is constantly in our fridge at one time. at the moment there's about 5 empty bottles littering our living room i think. only problem is if you're just having a few drinks it's slightly flat by the next time you drink from it.
Bulmer's is Belgian, Magner's is Irish and Strongbow is British. They are definitely not the same. Strongbow in North America is apparently crap compared to Strongbow Extra, which you can only get in the UK.
*looks up a bunch of posts*
Well, the Bulmer's I had was from Belgium anyway...
@Monster Radio Man OK, I see now that you did. I've had a lot of Cider in Ireland and the UK. There's a lot of variation even between the islands. I like US Strongbow better than Magner's and Bulmer's. UK Strongbow is probably a little better but you can variety there whereas we only have the one.
San Miguel this evening.
I've had a craving for mojitos recently though, which is sadly set to remain unsatisfied until my finances improve.
on beer: I was standing in front of a small but respectable variety at the store yesterday pondering which to buy. I was about to grab the Guinness Extra Stout when, instead, I reached down and picked up an 18 pack of MGD long necks. I'm from blue collar stock and it really shows up with vengeance sometimes.
I drank my cold Milwaukee suds last night and loved it.
@retro.joe I used to be a big fan of MGD. I'd say it's a good beer for summer drinking.
This summer is all about the sweet tea vodka. Jeremiah Weed, if possible. Half sweet tea vodka, half water. Little fresh lemon. Yumm.
yeah sweet tea vodka really is the shit. i'm glad they've started selling it in more places than just south carolina.
Yes, I thank the liquor promoters. Not unlike Pharmaceutical reps. Sexy women in tight clothing who go around and tell you what's going to be the next hot mixer.

these days i mostly drink a bottle of cherry lambrini before i go out, and then when i AM out and people are doing rounds i usually ask for a surprise. which often ends badly.
