why are blood oranges so much better than regular oranges? or do I just think they taste better because of how awesome they look?

I don't think I actually like them much. I prefer clementines or mandarin oranges.
satsuma mandarins are my favorites, but they're only in season for like a month or two
I like 'em all, but I do have a special place in my heart for all things tart.
they taste way better, but i don't think that's true to most people. blood oranges of the moro variety (which i assume you're referring to) are more minerally and thin than the more typical varietals. i actually prefer cara caras to moros which some consider a blood orange varietal but it really shouldn't be.

the one i'm eating now has this amazing orange to red to purple thing going on
