Web 1.0 was so much better than web 2.0.

The motivations were so much more pure.

No motivation is pure.

benbrown said, (264 days ago)

I just... I thought it was art before commerce.

Word.

HatAndSuitcase said, (264 days ago)

Well, yeah. First comes the art, then comes the porn, then comes the rest of commerce.

Every medium is like this, except video games which seem to be working in reverse order.

Web 2.0 is the Internet, and Web 1.0 was Spud Webb, right?

Because if so, I agree wholeheartedly.

reardensteel said, (264 days ago)

web 1.0 was all about the engineering (to me, one of the highest of art forms).

i don't know if i'd say that the motives were pure, but there definitely was the idea of being a pioneer of sorts. i mean, maybe we all weren't going to be the next vint cerf, but there was definitely a palpable feeling of being on the cusp of something revolutionary.

I can't wait till my kids tell me about web 5.0 and laugh at the fact that I used a mouse while they sit in their Windows Siesta run recliners and have the internet jacked into their brain stems.

web 1.0 was amazing. it was a good feeling the first time i realised i could make a better website than 90% of people out there. and if you wanted a blog, you made it yourself. WE DIDN'T EVEN CALL THEM BLOGS. god, i hate that word a lot. now, like everything else in the world, it's too accessible. when no skill or intelligence is required to "create" -- i use the term loosely -- everyone who shouldn't, does.

Corey Hart said, (264 days ago)

Web 2.0 is nothing more than marketing and a few buzzwords.

erica said, (264 days ago)

@ethan: Elitist! ELITIST!

I kid.

When I think of web 1.0 I think of homemade webpages with horrible blinking backgrounds.

Ethan said, (264 days ago)

hey we made those backgrounds blink OURSELVES! and we were PROUD.

Corey Hart said, (264 days ago)

@erica: I directly associate those pages with FrontPage, Geocities, and Angelfire.

*cringe*

erica said, (264 days ago)

"Kid, I had a blinking website way before any of youse."

Corey Hart said, (264 days ago)

Remember the hit counters?

"Look how popular I am!"

erica said, (264 days ago)

Hehe geocities. What happened to them?

TWIGBy Fierce said, (264 days ago)

don't you mean geoSHITTY?

CLEVER!

Xopchipili said, (264 days ago)

i can't even tell the difference between Web 2.0 and the good ol' fashioned version

TWIGBy Fierce said, (264 days ago)

i think web 1.0 had better memes, like "hello my future girlfriend"

Corey Hart said, (264 days ago)

@twigby: asl? pics NOW!

... MySpace?

Reamworks SKG said, (264 days ago)

I disagree. I was at Adobe during Web 1.0 and it nearly ruined the company. They kept aquiring useless companies with some pile-o-steamin-crap product.

Reamworks SKG said, (264 days ago)

Also, you were only 9 or 10 during Web 1.0! (Ben) What would you know?

erica said, (264 days ago)

@moneda - crap, I forgot.

Joel Mushiking said, (263 days ago)

I'm still in web 1.0

Here is a link to my Flash 4 video encouraging blogging, hosted on geocities.

Oom Mao Mao said, (263 days ago)

Web 1.0 was invented to allow physicists to share research papers.

Web 2.0 was created to allow people to share pictures of cute cats.

erica said, (263 days ago)

Joel, I love it.

madeleinemary said, (260 days ago)

that is a great video joel. did you use motion capture for the dancing?

Joel Mushiking said, (259 days ago)

@mad: Actually, that's just video of me dancing.
