Melissa Kaplan is a fucking genius, and you'd be wise to place her music in your collection.
cliche as it sounds I like basically anything. Mostly rock like Audioslave to Postal service, classical and reggae and classics from Sinatra to more recent 80s pop and new wave. But new sounds are ideal as I'm stuck in a sameness rut.
@ quarterly : I notice you're a pandora user, are you also on last.fm? I find it useful for discovering new things. Not as useful as it used to be, but still good all the same. Anyway if you use http://pandorafm.real-ity.com/login.php you can combine both sites for additional computer-generated recommendations.
If you like The Postal Service you might be interested in Iron and Wine's version of Such Great Heights (it features on the Garden State soundtrack I think)
How about some Slim Gaillard? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COADy27DCKE
Vout o'rooty!
Oh, I'd also recommend The Faint. They're a bit odd, but fantastic nonetheless.
1.25gb??? gak! I have 2 external 500gb drives just for music that I burned off cds. 2 because 1 is a back up.
I would suggest the jazz butcher, this compilation is a good starting point.

God. I put a portion of my collection on my new ipod last night, and it took up 48 GB.
Oh, and whenever people ask, I always recommend The Rosebuds.
