Has COD4 set the bar for online multiplayer so high that for years to come, future titles will never be able to measure up?

With Frontlines having come out last week, I've been hearing over and over again, "Yeah, it's pretty good, but I mean, it's not Call of Duty."

Tim said, (272 days ago)

Yeah, umm, I kind of thought that bar was set with Battlefield 2. COD4 is just a frag fest with no strategy or objectives. Boring.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

As a related sidenote, I was promoted to Captain (Lvl. 31) earlier today and was ridiculously, inordinately excited. I am aware that it's not even that good, but I still was very happy.

Tim said, (272 days ago)

Yeah, I felt that way when my new shoulders dropped in Zul'Aman.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

Seriously? It's not a frag fest at all!

And there are objectives! Didn't you play Sabotage/Search & Destroy/ Domination? Plus, there's all KINDS of personal objectives that unlock new weapons, explosives, and perks. What system were you playing it on?

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

@Tim - You obviously don't play CoD4.

@Beeps - I'm not sure many people are going to even pay much attention to it. I've noticed it's kind of a sleeper hit. BUT I'm definitely hoping future Call of Duty games will keep the same high standards. For a "frag fest with no strategy or objectives" it's a highly addicting game, and even after beating the Singleplayer and getting to the max level twice in Multiplayer, I still can't stop playing it. Even if it's just a half hour in the morning before work, I'm still pushing to get my next 20-kill streak, or 3:1 ratio in just knifing people.

It's got the trigger itchiness of Counter-Strike, a modification system similar to Crysis, and what seems to be an endless supply of good players to test wits against. It's definitely got more playtime from me than any other shooter has:

I haven't played it, but I heard that Gob liked it, so it must be good!

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

Also: as far as objectives go, I have more fun with just team deathmatch than any other mode. Dealing with bombs and "king of the hill" type stuff keeps me from watching people's heads splurt into a gooey mess. Regular deathmatch blows though. And hardcore is too hardcore.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

Haha, I love how WoW still reigns supreme in your video game life. I tried talking to one of my coworkers about WoW yesterday to be friendly, but he was just like "YOU DON'T REALLY CARE." :

That xfire thing is cool though, I haven't seen that before.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

By regular deathmatch do you mean free for all?

I agree about hardcore. I understand the concept, but it just pisses me off that I can't at least keep track of my score as I play. I mean, seriously, wtf?

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

WoW is my main squeeze...it's there for my day-to-day phat loot needs.

CoD is my backup generator for when I just need to put bullets in people.

And Guitar Hero is my backup backup for when I don't feel like using my brain.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

Yeah... Free for All.

I hate hardcore because I have to look at the radar like every two seconds to find more people to shoot at. I can't stand not knowing when some dude's gonna bumrush me and stab me in the back.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

I just finished the melee veteran objective today.

The only good thing about getting stabbed in the back is when you have the martyrdom perk enabled, and the fucker who just stabbed you gets blown up by a grenade about half a second later. It's always an LOL moment.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

Hah. I hate hearing that "tink" sound and having to run for my life...especially if there's two guys because I'll always stick around to shoot at the second one, only to get blown up. =/

I completely stopped trying to pick the grenades up and throw them back... I lose my hand/head every time.

Joel Mushiking said, (272 days ago)

Also, if anyone hasn't got it yet, you can get a $20 mail-in-rebate on it (or other Activision Games like Guitar Hero) using this:
http://a.slickdeals.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=81667&d=1204566460

Mail-in sortof sucks, but if you were going to get it anyhow...

Joel Mushiking said, (272 days ago)

I hope that wasn't spam!

Tim said, (272 days ago)

I played COD 4 on the 360. My friend had a beta account. I dunno, I guess I'm not the best fps judge. It's not my genre. I really, really hate that "spawn on the location of another player" thing. It's what makes it seem like a mindless blaster to me. Because you can never really clear an area! I also hate the complete lack of defensible areas. There are precisely zero rooms with one entrance.

But all these things are probably what make COD4 addictive for players that are into it.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

I buy my games used most of the time because doing so gets me 25% off. That's good to know though.

Speaking of Guitar Hero, I tried Rock Band for the first time last week and found it HIGHLY preferable.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

Of course that wasn't spam. That was being helpful!

Also, Tim, what are you even talking about? For each level, there are about 2-4 respawn points for each team. It wouldn't make any sense to spawn right where you died because there would be no penalty involved AND you'd probably just get killed all over again as soon as you set foot on the ground.

Are you sure we're even talking about the same game?

Joel Mushiking said, (272 days ago)

Yeah, Rock Band parties are way more fun than Guitar Hero ones, because they get everyone involved.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

Haven't played Rock Band...don't have a console past Gamecube.

More console games should come to the PC [but without terrible ports like Kane & Lynch, which was already terrible to begin with]

@Tim - You only really spawn on people if you're playing free for all... aside from that you usually spawn with your team. As for different entryways, that's what makes it fun. There's no camping and watching a doorway... you're always on the lookout for someone coming through the back door, through a side window... for people throwing grenades through your balcony... snipers from halfway across the map. The danger's what makes it fun.

I do think they should have slightly bigger maps though. Some are just cramped to the point where you have people rushing at you constantly. I like the grassy stages though, you can sneak around the entire game and just pick people off one by one without ever having to rush through a chokepoint doorway or camp in a tower somewhere. Sneakiness is my strong point. :)

Tim said, (272 days ago)

Hrmmmmmm.

So I went to go look this up. They patched in an additional 9 spawn points for each map. How are spawn points controlled? Maybe my friend just told me you spawn on other players because that's what it seemed like, and I didn't investigate closely enough. Certainly it seemed to my constantly fragged self that I was popping up in the middle of fights, and that the other team was appearing randomly, and far too quickly.

Tim said, (272 days ago)

@Johnny: Thank you! I thought I was crazy. I guess I only played free for all matches.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

See, I LOVE the cramped levels like Vacant because then everyone's right around each other and you don't spend forever just trying to track down your next target. With the smaller maps, you wait a couple of seconds and 5 guys waiting to be pumped full of lead fall right into your lap.

The only thing I don't like about Rock Band is how seemingly imprecise the drums are. I usually end up singing or playing guitar though, so it doesn't really matter. I like the tracklist better, because it has a good variety of older tunes and newer "hipper" stuff. Guitar Hero had some great old hits, but most of the newer stuff seemed like it was just yanked off the playlist of your generic, local "new rock" station.

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

Actually, maybe the dickheads on Xbox live are frag addicts, I wouldn't put it past them. I only play on Playstation Network, and my experience has been that explosives are used strategically but overall infrequently. The hands down emphasis is definitely on shooting.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

@Tim - Yeah man, free for all is a bitch because you're constantly spawning on top of grenades and such.

@Beeps - I agree about the tracklist for GH.... haven't seen the one for Rock Band but I know some GH songs are on it. Either way I don't really care what I play as long as it's fun/sounds cool.

As for Vacant... that place can suck it. The inside areas are too cluttered for me to aim properly, and the outside area is just a death trap. =/ Good for chucking grenades around corners though.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

And as far as consoles go, I can't stand shooter games with a controller. If I miss a guy because I didn't push the stick hard/soft enough, I'm gonna be pissed.

jennatar said, (272 days ago)

TEAM FORTRESS 2, ASSHOLES

also, i too prefer my shooters to be point-and-click, so what johnny squared said. i like absolute control, not struggling to negotiate my crosshairs. wuh oh is that a metaphor

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

@jenn - Pfft, you can find yourself in my crosshairs any day, lady. <3

I've been neglecting TF2. I'm not sure why... I was super stoked from day one of the beta until like 2 months after it came out, then I just stopped playing. =/

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

I only played team fortress 2 for a couple of minutes, but I didn't really enjoy it. I probably would have played it for longer if I had liked it better.

I can't wrap my head around playing any modern game on a PC. I think about using the arrow keys instead of an analog stick and shudder.

To each their own on that one, I guess.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

@Beeps - I'll convince you. And then we can play together. It'll be like having an affair. With games. And then you'll be like, no johnny, this isn't right, and I'll be like beeps, if this is wrong, I don't ever want to be right.

And then I'll get shot by the chopper. =/

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

Just use the M40E and shoot down the chopper, dorkface. Or an RPG, but that's really not as satisfying as shooting down a MOTHERFUCKING HELICOPTER WITH A MACHINE GUN.

Sorry, I just got really excited.

You should just buy a PS3. Then we'd be BFFz and have LAN parties and shit.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

@Beeps - Buy me one of these:

http://www.divineo.cn/cgi-bin/div-cn/ps3-xxrua

And I'll think about it.

I like sniping choppers... I'm not sure if it does any more damage, but I still try to shoot at the pilot. :P

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

Yeah fucking right. Haha.

Why not just use your tax return to buy that for yourself?

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

Tax return! HAH!

Beep Beep! said, (272 days ago)

You're not getting a tax return?!? Why not?

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

This is my first year working. I'm an independent contractor. I have very few expenses.

They're not the ones handing over money in this situation.

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

Well, my first year working a real job... the comic shop and post office were just checks made out to cash.

Rick27593 said, (272 days ago)

See, you can say that, but there will always be people that will say an older game, or possibly even newer game is better multiplayer. Hell, my favorite multiplayer game is still Tribes, which came out in 1998.

jennatar said, (272 days ago)

as an independent contractor, you can write off your apartment space, right? there's some sort of rent/square foot mathstuffs that i remember turbotax calculating for me (i was an oddjobber during the first half of 2006).

Chrome Raven said, (272 days ago)

somebody said Tribes?

I've only gotten to play some split screen in COD4 multi. It was fun, but I really had no idea what was going on.

Joel Mushiking said, (272 days ago)

Rock Band calibration for each instrument is super important, particularly for flat-screen monitors. It can be a terribly frustrating experience if the instruments aren't calibrated right for lag/delay. Not sure if that's the problem your drums were having, though, but that's been my experience...

hey jude said, (272 days ago)

@jenn - Not sure... I have a friend of my mom's [her tax guy] doing my taxes... he just got the forms so he's gonna get back to me on stuff I can write off. I know I'll be getting at least 300 in bus passes off. :)

re: Tribes - That game is sweet. I haven't played number three because my computer was pretty crappy at the time, but I did buy 2 [I think I got it free when I bought Warcraft 3, for some reason], and I love it, I just wish more people still played it.

DavidBoring said, (259 days ago)

is anyone beside playing on PSN ? my prejudices taught me that americans prefer the xbox to the ps3

Beep Beep! said, (257 days ago)

I'm on PSN.

My ID is "danithrash" if you want to friend me or whatever.

jennatar said, (244 days ago)

i just learned from a friend that 'tribes' is a dynamix game, a follow-up to my favorite turn-based strategy, 'missionforce: cyberstorm', and also part of the 'earthsiege' universe. badass. hi, pal.
