Are the queues at polling places really hours long? How the hell can the US so consistently and dramatically fail at running elections?

The last couple of federal elections I've voted in, my polling place was in the middle of Sydney, and I was in and out in ten minutes.

I vote at the local primary school, on whose oval I spent a lot of time drinking, arsoning, etc. It's awkward.
