It seems to me that there are a LOT of books, and movies, and TV shows about vampires. Like, vampires are practically a whole separate genre or something. And that is an awfully specific thing to have a genre about -- imaginary dead people who walk around and have a very specific list of powers and weaknesses.

It's kind of like superhero comic books would be if all superheroes were EXACTLY like Superman. Maybe occasionally minor differences, but if all superheroes had the same basic origin story, and the same basic list of strengths and weaknesses, and people STILL wrote hundreds of comics about hundreds of superheroes, that is what this whole vampire thing would be like. Why so much of things about vampires?

Oh, I'm not even saying anything about the relative coolness of vampires and Superman. I'm just saying that it's gotten to the point where... okay. If you write a book about werewolves, that is a book about werewolves. There might be other stuff going on thematically, but werewolves is mostly what it's about.

But it seems to me that they are doing things about vampires, and vampires aren't even what the book is ABOUT. It's like the author just sort of took the presence of vampires as a given, and then was like, "okay, I'm going to write a story about the morality of revenge" or whatever. No, wait, this is a story about vampires. You're not even acknowledging that you just dropped a bunch of vampires into your book. Isn't that a conscious decision for you? Seriously?

And all I'm saying is, it works for superheroes, but there's not really a lot you can DO with vampires. The range of plotlines and character traits that can be attached to some vampires is ultimately pretty limited.

Also, they can't eat garlic, so their idea of food must be pretty boring too.

Vampires begin and end for me with Buffy, the Vampire Slayer. Vampires are evil and must be killed. Unless they have a restored soul.
