here is where we speculate about why tragedy is beautiful.

also, i am jet-lagged in vienna in the hotel lobby where my room is not ready yet and i really need to crash. prost!
gosh. Cos it forces even the most cold hearted people to feel SOMETHING
p.s. i thought of it because of someone's thread about eternal sunshine (which is amazing), but i can't remember whose because i'm blitzed.
these things are always more apparent when you're jet-lagged, tired, hungry and out of place.
but I don't know the answer.
Because sometimes we need to cry. And tragedy is a socially-accepted and structured form of eliciting tears. Catharsis is necessary; Aristotle tells us this.
Now, as to why certain works make one cry…well, that's a whole other kettle of fish.
because it makes you feel better about your own depressing life. (this is only MY reason) also for the aforementioned reason that sometimes you just need to cry.
@jeep- it doesn't make you think your depressing life is beautiful?
When I need to emote, I often seek out music or movies that will undoubtedly make me let it all out. It's a beautiful thing when you feel you can connect with a piece of art; that it can empathize with you at such a primal level and illustrate the indescribable things that go on in our minds.
Tragedy is the study of what we do, and the examination of that is the path to beauty.
Well, drama is the study of what we do, tragedy is just the goat song, or something like it.

you know, like how you love art/film/music that makes you cry, and even watch it again knowing it will make you cry again, that sort of thing.
