Help with configuring a new LCD monitor?

Could you be more specific as to what is straining your eyes? How big is the monitor? Is it flickering? What kind of video card do you have? Is it just "too bright"?
If it's simply "too bright", your eyes probably just need a bit of time to adjust.
It's a Dell E198FP Flat Panel 19 inch 1280x1024 native. It's not flickering. It was blindingly bright so I turned the brightness way down. It's not flickering that I can see, it's just like hard to focus on and kind of uh spotty? This is really hard to describe.
Try the monitor on a different computer. If you get the same thing, try to RMA it.
I think that it's probably fine and you're whining over something small, but there's no way for me to be sure about that without actually sitting in front of the monitor.
I have a 32" LCD at work that I took the VGA cable out of and put the HD cable in, but now all the letters have like reddish or bluish "ghost letters" around them. it's weird.
Some new monitors have different color modes. My monitor has about 4 or 5 different modes for various things. Gaming, Theater, Standard, Nighttime, etc.
I generally just leave it on standard.
@johnny: and it's hdmi on both the monitor and video card, or are you using an adapter?
Feel free to turn it down much lower than 40. The 100 setting is for people in brightly-lit offices who need a bright monitor. In a dimmer office, 20 might be plenty.
Also, make sure you're running at native resolution, and if you have blank wall behind the monitors, put a mirror or something behind them so your eyes can focus on something distant periodically to avoid eyestrain.

I got new monitors at work and they are fucking blinding me. They are so fucking bright and the words are like I dunno... letters have like a halo. I dragged the brightness way down (40 out of 100) and it's still kind of hard to look at. Am I missing something? Do I need to adjust the refresh rate or something? Help! I'm gonna get eyestrain or something.
