How many of you (guys included!) openly identify as feminists? Anyone coming into this thread to tell me about "feminazis" or how feminism doesn't exist or doesn't need to exist can go elsewhere, please.

I've been a feminist my whole life.

Xenu said, (73 days ago)

I'm not afraid to say that I'm a feminist. My mother and father are both feminists, and neither of them hate men.

Xenu said, (73 days ago)

I have a boyfriend. I shave my legs. I also believe in equal pay for equal work, that my birth control should be covered by the insurance policy that I PAY FOR, that welfare should be accessible to mothers with jobs as well as without, and that if I have a daughter who wants to be the President of the United States of America, this shouldn't be revolutionary.

L said, (73 days ago)

i don't really identify myself with any group or belief system or &tc., openly or covertly.

L said, (73 days ago)

i think i just don't like labels.

Naturelle Rivera said, (73 days ago)

I've never identified myself as a feminist in any way. I believe women should be treated equally as men, but I believe everyone should be treated equally under any circumstances.

Carlo said, (73 days ago)

What she said.

Carlo said, (73 days ago)

By "she" I meant Libi.

Carlo said, (73 days ago)

Though Celisse makes a valid point.

purl said, (73 days ago)

it should come as no surprise that I embrace the label.

Beej said, (73 days ago)

I very much embrace the label, although I suspect some others who self-identify as feminists would have strong issues with some of the beliefs I hold as feminist (abolition of alimony, equal custody rights and responsibilities of both mothers and fathers, &c).

I always tell myself, "Lexi, c'mon, you're not a feminist..." Then people get me started on women's issues, especially abortion. Then I tell myself "Lexi, you might just be a feminist."

Matthew... said, (73 days ago)

yo.

Xenu said, (73 days ago)

@purl: You? Nah.
@Beej: I'm not surprised, as you've wrestled with some of those things yourself, and I agree that the current alimony and child custody laws could stand to be modified somewhat.

Naturelle Rivera said, (73 days ago)

I think if I identified with any label, it would be homosexual male (top).

Corey Hart said, (73 days ago)

I consider myself a feminist in the regard that I have the same expectations of women as I do of men.

Pagne said, (73 days ago)

@corey: big tits.

Corey Hart said, (73 days ago)

@pagne: exactly.

I really don't see a need to proclaim feminism. I guess I feel like we are past that. I take it for granted that men and women are equal.

le_sacre said, (73 days ago)

there's still a need to proclaim feminism when the rights and equal opportunities of women are still consistently under attack by men in power.  when there are women, anywhere in the world, whose life options are drastically limited just based on the fact that they're women, then there's still a need to proclaim feminism.

so yes, i'm a feminist.

mizsarah said, (73 days ago)

From the National Organization of Women website:
In 1963, the year of the Equal Pay Act's passage, full-time working women were paid 59 cents on average to the dollar received by men, while in 2005 women were paid 77 cents for every dollar received by men.

So no, I don't think we're treated equally yet. But I hope it'll happen soon.

Dr. Awkward said, (73 days ago)

You sound like you have a lot on you mind. 7/10 of a penny for your thought?

Corey Hart said, (73 days ago)

@mizsarah: Those statistics could be a bit misleading. Wage is primarily based on position/rank, education, and quality of work.

If a woman isn't as capable a worker as a man, she shouldn't be paid the same. Of course, the opposite applies.

I'm not saying that women aren't competent, but that study doesn't indicate the details, but instead appears to be an average of salaries across the market.

giu said, (72 days ago)

To be honest after studying feminist theory and applying it to other marginalized groups, I feel like the theory needs a new name. I see myself as an advocate and "ally" for marginalized groups but I don't label myself "feminist." Does that make sense?

Sarah von Pantyhose said, (72 days ago)

@corey- those stats are usually balanced for that...

women get paid less for the same jobs as men. In some fields it's just more obvious.

Sarah von Pantyhose said, (72 days ago)

oh and I'm with Giu, big Fucking Surprise.

mizsarah said, (72 days ago)

@Corey,
I'm looking at the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to see if there's any merit to your assumption. The best study I can find is 8 years out of date, but it finds that the difference is mostly due to the fact that jobs traditionally held by women are paid less across the board than "men's" jobs (e.g. construction and manufacturing).
Another study says that when you look at college educated workers who work over 60 hours a week, the wage difference jump even higher. So no, I don't think it's about who works harder.

Corey Hart said, (72 days ago)

I'm not denying that there might still be a gap, I'm just pointing out the fact that wages will vary, regardless.

The survey would really only be relevant if it were done on a per company per position basis.

You can't compare salaries from company to company or from position to position.

Xenu,

I'm a Feminist, a Camila Paglia feminist, definitely not Dworkin or Gloria Steinem (who I dislike). Admitted, I havn't read much of any of their works, probably 2-3 books and many articles for each of the women I mentioned.

Xenu said, (72 days ago)

@MisterDarcy: That is why you are awesome. Thank you for posting in my thread.

@mizsarah: As always, you kick ass more than Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

khaaaaansumating said, (72 days ago)

As if! Buffy was THE SLAYER. You can't kick more ass than that. Unless you are a slayer with friends and family who back you up.

Yeah, I'm one. I'm... some kind of modern Wollstonecraftian? I'm sure there's a better name for it, because Wollstonecraft said a lot of things that (while perfectly good in their time) just aren't relevant and/or defensible two centuries later. I'm sure there is some feminist or other who pretty much agrees with what I believe, but isn't always grounding everything in religion or asking that women be allowed to go to college or something. But I try to avoid reading anything from the 20th century when possible, so I don't really know who that might be.

Of course, the issue I'm most actively engaged with is the general disrespect of women in comedy, which is distressingly rampant -- both in terms of some people's material, and in terms of the way women comedians are treated by a lot of people. It's not really a theoretical concern, of course -- more of a practical one... less a case of elaborate philosophical frameworks, more a case of some people being jerks and some other people not being inclined to stop them. (Then again, I harbor the suspicion that most philosophical frameworks are generally an attempt at systematizing the fact that some people are being jerks and other people don't stop them.)

Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Salomea said, (72 days ago)

And I want to kickpunch anyone who says we are "past feminism." On a regular basis, reading and hearing some things a lot of men say about women, seeing how they treat women, etc, makes me so angry I either want to go hide in a cave and cry or go and bite people. FUCK YOU if you're so privileged and comfy and blind that you can say we're "past it."

daisy half-wit said, (72 days ago)

I'm a very public feminist. I'm the editor of a my campus' only feminist publication, called KATE. I am all up on the feminist blogs. Periodically I march with the Columbus chapter of NOW.

Corey Hart said, (72 days ago)

Damn uppity women.

CocktailsMalIntent said, (72 days ago)

@Giu: the term for that is generally "equalist/equalism." There are quite a few people who see the feminist label as being too constricting or too specific, so your stance definitely makes sense.

That said, I'm with you on this. I feel very strongly about fighting for women's rights and on behalf of women's issues, but also for fighting for gay rights and equality, minority issues, and, occasionally, for men's rights in the rare situation were we're getting the raw deal (mostly in regards to custody/divorce issues).

IceOwl said, (71 days ago)

I think it is good to fight for the underdog: the under-represented, underclassed, underpaid, those with fewer rights and less freedom to choose. I think feminism is one of many things that falls from that tree.

adam_alligator said, (71 days ago)

i love women especially virgins.
