I'm really really good at talking about myself. Getting to know someone else... not so good. So, tell me about yourself. (And give me tips that will help IRL to stop talking about myself and getting to know the other person)

Ask questions! Lots of them. Making a game out of it can be fun.
I'm horrible at thinking of questions to ask someone...
Joining my band has been a good test, considering I need to suck up as much as I possibly can... I just... come up blank when trying to start up conversation...
In desperate times I'll just flat out tell them.. "Hey... I'm really really good at talking about myself, but horrible at getting to the other person.. so ... tell me about yourself"... kinda breaks the ice... gets them to laugh...
I am too. Get everyone here to make you a list, and keep the best ones in your mind for the future.
Once you know a little bit about someone, thinking up questions gets easier!

Europeans make fun of us for it all the time. I see no reason to break with tradition.
@ajt: When asking that question I'm plagued with guilt cause I feel so fake askign that... and seeming interested...
What do you do/read/study/like to learn about/enjoy doing in your time off/enjoy listening to/do around town?
favorite book/library/museum/art style/shirt/etc?

the only tip I can give is constant vigilance
as a guy, by default, I am guilty of talking about myself too much... age seems to help with that though
when you remember to ask about someone else, truly listen and be interested, instead of waiting for your chance to speak
