Location vs. Neighborhood
Replies
Other than the all electric kitchen (I cannot cook on an electric stove, I'm sorry), it sounds nice enough. I figure you don't with the "nice" part tho?
Sounds nice, right? I have two problems with the area:
1) Only one bus line even goes near the place. I've decided to forgo a new car for the next few months and save up for a used one as part of my overall Get Outta SD fund. At the moment I've got at least 3-4 bus routes within walking distance.
2) It's suburban as all hell. If I walk for 15 minutes, away from our current hellhole, I get to all sorts of bars, music venues, music stores, ethnic eateries, you name it. Now, I'm not crazy for wanting to live near my neighborhood bar, right?
Ahhh... it's the suburbs. :P
1. Can't you put yourself through the hell of bus transfers for a few months in order to continue with your plan?
2. Again, can't you go through the hell of not being social for a few months?
And my own..
Is this new apartment less rent than you currently pay?
@Art: If I were moving to somewhere else in SD, North Park or Hillcrest is where I would move to.
Beccah, the rent's about the same, which is crazy, considering the respective neighborhoods. The neighborhood I want to return to also costs about the same. So assuming I don't fuck up financially, the plan should work, no matter where I go.
As to your other two points, they're valid, but, having moved four times in the past two years, and only once because I really wanted to and not had to (relatively speaking, of course), I'm beginning to pre-emptively chafe at the notion of making more sacrifices than might be necessary.
Soulcamp: And NP's where I want to get to; this new pad is in Serra Mesa. I think it's near the Costco and Islands. Yay.
Is that the best you can do rent wise? I don't know SD at all.. but in ATL there are really interesting neighbourhoods sandwiched between poverty stricken ones, and because of that, they are much cheaper than other places intown..
Also, I agree.. if you don't have to make the sacrifices, then don't. Push the roomies toward something you find more appropriate, if you need to keep them... otherwise, fuck 'em and move where you want to move, or get a smaller place where you are...
Beccah, that's about the best one can do while staying near the neighborhoods Soulcamp mentioned, not to mention my job. Aside from that, it's the drizzling shits or the high-rent districts, pretty much.
@Art: My mother-in-law used to live in that area. We got her a place there because it was right next to the trolly stop. But, just like where I live, not much to do after 8 pm.
Soulcamp: There *are* a few bars nearby, but I get the feeling I wouldn't blend in much.
I'd rather live in a crappy(-ish) apartment than have to live in the 'burbs.

The plan is for my roomies and I to escape Section 8 hell at the end of October. Today, one of the roomies found an apartment in a "nice" part of town. I'll quote the ad below:
