There's nothing wrong with closing your door. If she follows you into your room when you're trying to do work, wait until she takes a breath and say, "I'd love to finish this story, but I REALLY need to work on something right now. Tell me later."

just say, "hey, i really don't intend this to be mean, and in fact i'm saying it now before it has the chance to escalate into being mean- but sometimes i just like to be left alone. so if i say to you, 'can we talk later?' it's just because i need some quiet, and not because i don't like you, and we actually will talk later, ok?"

Living with friends is rough, especially when you have an issue, because it makes it so much more complicated. I'd second Pepper's advice. One thing a former roommate (and still one of my bestest friends) and I used to do is save issue-talk and make a beer date across the street on neutral ground. It helped a LOT.

I think Pepper is def right, but I tend to be a weenie in these situations and think IF I IGNORE IT IT WILL GO AWAY.
I think she's cranky now because I closed my door and was silent for a good hour. Xeens also has a good point, I just don't see myself hanging out with her outside the house. She bugs me and she smokes pot constantly.

What it comes down to, sweetums, is whether you want to be friends again when you emerge from this living situation. If you aren't worried about treading on her feelings, be frank with her and have at it.
Fire extinguisher. Will solve both the coming-into-your-room and the pot-smoke problems.

No, I don't want to hurt her feelings, she's a nice girl, but not a mesher with the me. My friend (the other roommate) has mono and is home for the next few weeks, so she's had no one else to harass since Ben (boyfriend) for the most part ignores her.

I'm like that girl. I totally used to do this to my previous roommate all the time, though I don't think she minded. Anyway, I second Val's advice.
a) Close your door. An open door means "come in, I'm not doing anything private." Everyone I've lived with kept their door open when they didn't mind visitors, and closed when they wanted to be alone.
b) Say "I'm sorry, but I'm really busy right now." That says "I can't talk" not "I don't want to talk to you."

@Matthew: She comes up to my waist, she's so tiny. I don't think punching her is the way to go. You can come hang out though.
I moved in with my closest friend at school, her boyfriend (who is also a good friend), and a random friend of hers. The random friend, while a nice girl and harmless in most arenas, she talks. She talks a lot.
She tends to follow me into my room even when I've said that I'm going to do work and she'll prattle at me without my response--she does this early in the morning, too. I feel like a complete twat for being annoyed by the fact that she wants to talk to me, but at the same time I enjoy time on my bed, alone with my thoughts and one of the Twilight books.
How do I dispatch her without being an asshat?
