if i wanted to do a "classic" burlesque number (meaning gown, boa, etc) to a modern (and recognizable) song, what would your suggestion be?

Corey Hart said, (77 days ago)

You could always do Britney Spears...

makelikepaper said, (77 days ago)

what about feist - my moon my man?

it may be a little fast but it definitely has that sexy appeal.

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

something by nina simone

makelikepaper said, (77 days ago)

ahem, new?

makelikepaper said, (77 days ago)

pepper, you could always pick an amy winehouse song - though i'm sure it's done to death

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

or the fugees' version of "killing me softly"

null said, (77 days ago)

Crimson & Clover, girl! Slow and seductive and rockin'

lay oale said, (77 days ago)

oh "You know I'm No Good" is a good one

how about the Ting Tings "Great DJ"?

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

amy winehouse is too obvious, which is a pity.

nina simone is too classico- i want a song that you really wouldn't expect a classy bump n grind number to.

i am not that familiar with feist, but i will look into it.

the fugees is more along the lines of what i would look for probably.

britney doesn't have any songs i could be classy to, duh!

lay oale said, (77 days ago)

or "Spread for me" by Outkast

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

how modern?

criminal - fiona apple maybe?

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

crimson & clover = done 2839238579834 times

i don't know the ting tings

lay oale said, (77 days ago)

In fact, Speakerbox is kind of what it sounds like you want.

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

@laydee: i don't know that song- i will listen

@skanko: YUS like that. mmmm. let me ponder.

null said, (77 days ago)

Pepper: really? Awww. I've never seen it done, but I can see how it could be obvious.

makelikepaper said, (77 days ago)

oooh, i like skanko's suggestion

makelikepaper said, (77 days ago)

what about bjork? it's oh so quiet? i like the slow/fast idea. and big band sound.

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

@pepppppper - thats just a really sexy song i think. its slow but not too slow where it would be boring, and really goes well with writhing and grinding. if i think of anything else ill be back.

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

handsome boy modeling school, "the truth" -- too obscure?

null said, (77 days ago)

MAKELIKEPAPER: I WAS JUST GONNA SUGGEST THAT BJORK! sorry. excited

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

god, please don't do bjork.

null said, (77 days ago)

@strangerbox: Whyyy? :(

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

because bjork has no mojo.

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

it's oh so quiet has been done.

i don't think i can actually do "criminal" because it's sort of... too direct? but something like that. modern and medium tempo

null said, (77 days ago)

Kate Bush - Sensual World
Jesus & Mary Chain - Just Like Honey

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

@pepper - true, there isn't much question whats goin on there.

null said, (77 days ago)

Anything from Massive Attack or Tricky

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

it mgiht be a little slow, but i love massive attack - teardrop. and im pretty sure so does everyone else alive.

Angus MacSmitey said, (77 days ago)

Yeah, I would have suggested "Overcome" from Maxinquaye, since it's downtempo, bass-heavy and built on breathy female vocals - unfortunately it's neither new nor especially recognizable.

null said, (77 days ago)

Roxy Music - Slave To Love

null said, (77 days ago)

Inertia Creeps is an amazingly hot song off Mezzanine

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

how modern do you want, can it be 90s?

null said, (77 days ago)

Oooh oooh! Rufus Wainwright - Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk.

TWIGBy Fierce said, (77 days ago)

portishead

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

it could have come out yesterday or in the seventies- i just want it to be something that wouldn't traditionally be a bump n grind song.

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

portishead is too obvious. anything you're likely to put on during sexytimes (ambient, etc) probably not going to fly here.

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

i'm looking for RADIO songs.

TWIGBy Fierce said, (77 days ago)

i also second feist

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

ok... i was thinking "tom's diner" by suzanne vega, the remix version that was popular on the radio.

Oom Mao Mao said, (77 days ago)

Bad Company - Feel Like Makin' Love

TWIGBy Fierce said, (77 days ago)

pffttt.. THE RADIO? WE'RE ALL A BUNCH OF DIRTY HIPSTERS HERE

duffy I GUESS

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

bump and grind by r. kelly?
what? no?

null said, (77 days ago)

@strangerbox: That song totally was on the radio. That's a GREAT idea.

TWIGBy Fierce said, (77 days ago)

i don't even know what music really goes with burlesque to be honest...

Corey Hart said, (77 days ago)

Sneakerpimps - Six Underground

Oom Mao Mao said, (77 days ago)

Foreigner - Urgent

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

that handsome boy modeling school song is a good one, i will make a note of it.

i really want something that will make people go OH YEAH, THIS SONG.

this is hard!

Jay Def said, (77 days ago)

@Oom - Hahaha. Now I'd like to see that!

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

yeah, it's an amazing song but i'm not sure it's all that well-known. it's also maybe a little too slow in tempo.

Oom Mao Mao said, (77 days ago)

If you want something similar to Criminal by Fiona Apple, feed that song title into Pandora and see what comes up.

Let technology do it for you!

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

tom's diner would be a good choice if there weren't so many damn words. the lyrics are distracting- because it's almost spoken word.

six underground- this could work...

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

FOREIGNER would actually be awesome. i'm totally pro doing songs of this nature.

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

i love foreigner actually, and my parents just went to a.c. this weekend to see them. weird.

Oom Mao Mao said, (77 days ago)

Foreigner, Urgent, has sexy lyrics as well. Booty call lyrics for the mullet set.

TWIGBy Fierce said, (77 days ago)

primitive radio god - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand! (yeah i copy pasted the song title!)

TWIGBy Fierce said, (77 days ago)

fuck scratch that one, bump n' grind.....

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

bill withers, "ain't no sunshine"

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

i dont see nothing wrong, with a little bump and grind.

Beej said, (77 days ago)

Cream "White Room."

hey jude said, (77 days ago)

I love little girls they make me feel so good...

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

Mirror in the Bathroom by the English Beat

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

i have a number in progress that uses parts of "aint no sunshine."

the r kelly song would have to be handled really comedically.

ps- beej- i love that song

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

Hip Hop Hooray by Naughty By Nature

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

Goody Two Shoes by Adam Ant

Jay Def said, (77 days ago)

@Moose - Oh, Goody Two Shoes would be awesome! Love that song!

hey jude said, (77 days ago)

ooooooh, barracuda.

or the alternate - craaaazyy on youuu.

Beej said, (77 days ago)

Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound

Jay Def said, (77 days ago)

@johnny - I think if she's going to do Heart, she should do Magic Man.

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

these are good suggestions. they make my brain work harder.

strangerbox said, (77 days ago)

white town, "i could never be your woman"

scurvyman said, (77 days ago)

Justin Timberlake - LoveStoned

Beej said, (77 days ago)

Or: Space - The Female of the Species

lay oale said, (77 days ago)

Gnarls Barkley: Necromancer, Transformer

hey jude said, (77 days ago)

you could go extra classic and bring sexy back with beethoven.

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

This is how we do it

null said, (77 days ago)

I second the White Town.

null said, (77 days ago)

OMG Does anyone remember that one song that was on the radio all the time (I Promise)

Space - Female of the Species. Give it a listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-wIvsZBFhQ

Jay Def said, (77 days ago)

Knights of Cydonia by Muse would be awesome, but it might be a little fast for what you're doing.

Beej said, (77 days ago)

Grandma, I just said the same thing! We are Space Twins.

null said, (77 days ago)

@Beej: High five! I didn't see your suggestion. I really feel like it'd be an awesome one.

Beej said, (77 days ago)

@grandma, and since we both agree I think Pepper has to do it!

Deep-Fried Goodness said, (77 days ago)

Most of Goldfrapp's work seems suitable for burlesque, but it's not too recognizable for some people

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

I have that Space album.

soulcamp said, (77 days ago)

I know my cred for "modern" music is pretty suspect, but "Pillow Talk" by Sylvia is pretty risque. It's also 35 years old, and probably nobody here but me has ever heard it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p7nwia-zWw

soulcamp said, (77 days ago)

Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby" can get pretty %^&*@! as well.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1ArZEFwRsY

hey jude said, (77 days ago)

Do that coldplay song that's on the radio. People go spidermonkey for that shit.

Skanko said, (77 days ago)

@johnny - theres some swizz beats song now with that song sampled in it. its weird.

bizzy said, (77 days ago)

The Stranger - Billy Joel

Starts out slow and seductive, but picks up and has really great lyrics and recognizable tune!

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

But see, I read this as Pep wants songs that aren't totally obvious. Am I off base here?

hey jude said, (77 days ago)

"more pepper! said, (1 hour ago)

i'm looking for RADIO songs."

radio is totally obvious, I don't care what station you listen to.

lay oale said, (77 days ago)

@garms: I love that song

Moose Elaine said, (77 days ago)

No, I mean songs that are on the radio, but aren't totally obvious for burlesque. Like "Love to Love You."
(sorry soulcamp, not a personal jab, just the easiest one to see on my screen)

hey jude said, (77 days ago)

Pfft, that's rare. Usually when soulcamp talks music I have no idea what he's talking about.

soulcamp said, (77 days ago)

If Pepper actually does a routine to "Love To Love You Baby", I insist that I be allowed to be her backup dancer, using the same routine as the dancers in the video.

bizzy said, (77 days ago)

Ordinary Morning - Sheryl Crow

Not sure if it was on the radio, but I could see it being a good backdrop for a slow, sultry burlesque number.

What tempo are you looking for again?

more pepper! said, (77 days ago)

DAS YOU ARE A JERK that will be stuck in my head all day

the space song is a good suggestion.

i'm looking for medium tempo- not too slow because that's just too much like sexytime, and not too fast because then i will need to dance.

crimson and clover is a good tempo, six underground is a good tempo.

i'm looking for a song that's sexy without being OVERTLY so. something that most people would recognize.

soulcamp said, (77 days ago)

I don't think I can be of much help - all the music I listen to is overtly sexy.

soulcamp said, (77 days ago)

Van Morrison's "Moondance" just came on my iTunes. It's seems kinda of classic burlesquey.

Salomea said, (77 days ago)

Pulp--"Pencil skirt," too obvious?

seemingly satanic said, (77 days ago)

Love Me Like a Reptile by Motorhead.
