if i wanted to do a "classic" burlesque number (meaning gown, boa, etc) to a modern (and recognizable) song, what would your suggestion be?
Replies
what about feist - my moon my man?
it may be a little fast but it definitely has that sexy appeal.
pepper, you could always pick an amy winehouse song - though i'm sure it's done to death
oh "You know I'm No Good" is a good one
how about the Ting Tings "Great DJ"?
amy winehouse is too obvious, which is a pity.
nina simone is too classico- i want a song that you really wouldn't expect a classy bump n grind number to.
i am not that familiar with feist, but i will look into it.
the fugees is more along the lines of what i would look for probably.
britney doesn't have any songs i could be classy to, duh!
crimson & clover = done 2839238579834 times
i don't know the ting tings
@laydee: i don't know that song- i will listen
@skanko: YUS like that. mmmm. let me ponder.
Pepper: really? Awww. I've never seen it done, but I can see how it could be obvious.
what about bjork? it's oh so quiet? i like the slow/fast idea. and big band sound.
@pepppppper - thats just a really sexy song i think. its slow but not too slow where it would be boring, and really goes well with writhing and grinding. if i think of anything else ill be back.
it's oh so quiet has been done.
i don't think i can actually do "criminal" because it's sort of... too direct? but something like that. modern and medium tempo
it mgiht be a little slow, but i love massive attack - teardrop. and im pretty sure so does everyone else alive.
Yeah, I would have suggested "Overcome" from Maxinquaye, since it's downtempo, bass-heavy and built on breathy female vocals - unfortunately it's neither new nor especially recognizable.
Oooh oooh! Rufus Wainwright - Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk.

it could have come out yesterday or in the seventies- i just want it to be something that wouldn't traditionally be a bump n grind song.
portishead is too obvious. anything you're likely to put on during sexytimes (ambient, etc) probably not going to fly here.
ok... i was thinking "tom's diner" by suzanne vega, the remix version that was popular on the radio.
pffttt.. THE RADIO? WE'RE ALL A BUNCH OF DIRTY HIPSTERS HERE
duffy I GUESS
i don't even know what music really goes with burlesque to be honest...
that handsome boy modeling school song is a good one, i will make a note of it.
i really want something that will make people go OH YEAH, THIS SONG.
this is hard!
yeah, it's an amazing song but i'm not sure it's all that well-known. it's also maybe a little too slow in tempo.
If you want something similar to Criminal by Fiona Apple, feed that song title into Pandora and see what comes up.
Let technology do it for you!
tom's diner would be a good choice if there weren't so many damn words. the lyrics are distracting- because it's almost spoken word.
six underground- this could work...
FOREIGNER would actually be awesome. i'm totally pro doing songs of this nature.
i love foreigner actually, and my parents just went to a.c. this weekend to see them. weird.
Foreigner, Urgent, has sexy lyrics as well. Booty call lyrics for the mullet set.
primitive radio god - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand! (yeah i copy pasted the song title!)
i have a number in progress that uses parts of "aint no sunshine."
the r kelly song would have to be handled really comedically.
ps- beej- i love that song
OMG Does anyone remember that one song that was on the radio all the time (I Promise)
Space - Female of the Species. Give it a listen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-wIvsZBFhQ
Knights of Cydonia by Muse would be awesome, but it might be a little fast for what you're doing.

this one seems to suit you
@Beej: High five! I didn't see your suggestion. I really feel like it'd be an awesome one.
Most of Goldfrapp's work seems suitable for burlesque, but it's not too recognizable for some people
I know my cred for "modern" music is pretty suspect, but "Pillow Talk" by Sylvia is pretty risque. It's also 35 years old, and probably nobody here but me has ever heard it.
Do that coldplay song that's on the radio. People go spidermonkey for that shit.
@johnny - theres some swizz beats song now with that song sampled in it. its weird.
The Stranger - Billy Joel
Starts out slow and seductive, but picks up and has really great lyrics and recognizable tune!
But see, I read this as Pep wants songs that aren't totally obvious. Am I off base here?
"more pepper! said, (1 hour ago)
i'm looking for RADIO songs."
radio is totally obvious, I don't care what station you listen to.
No, I mean songs that are on the radio, but aren't totally obvious for burlesque. Like "Love to Love You."
(sorry soulcamp, not a personal jab, just the easiest one to see on my screen)
Pfft, that's rare. Usually when soulcamp talks music I have no idea what he's talking about.
If Pepper actually does a routine to "Love To Love You Baby", I insist that I be allowed to be her backup dancer, using the same routine as the dancers in the video.
Ordinary Morning - Sheryl Crow
Not sure if it was on the radio, but I could see it being a good backdrop for a slow, sultry burlesque number.
What tempo are you looking for again?
DAS YOU ARE A JERK that will be stuck in my head all day
the space song is a good suggestion.
i'm looking for medium tempo- not too slow because that's just too much like sexytime, and not too fast because then i will need to dance.
crimson and clover is a good tempo, six underground is a good tempo.
i'm looking for a song that's sexy without being OVERTLY so. something that most people would recognize.
I don't think I can be of much help - all the music I listen to is overtly sexy.
Van Morrison's "Moondance" just came on my iTunes. It's seems kinda of classic burlesquey.

You could always do Britney Spears...
