you could also find something to use as a "hair rat."

for instance, today, i didn't feel like teasing my hair, so i wrapped and pinned it around a rolled up half-pair of black tights. looks just the same.

if you want victory rolls, there's that tutorial on my flickr. pomping is similar in that you tease all across the section you want up, then smooth the front and pin as you see fit.
