cell phone technology and usage for the uninitiated: a plea for help
Replies
man, i totally neglected my own convo because i got so excited -j. was back!
ok, so...
but first, a shout out to you, art, for populating my threads even when no one else does.
so: i have no cell phone and never wanted one. now am thinking i should get one for my trip. so it has to be one i can use in foreign countries. i want to get the kind that you can buy cards with minutes for in whatever country you're in and it will work.
apparently the rest of the world uses those kind of phones but we silly americans don't usually.
BUT i have had my landline # for over 12 years and don't want to give it up. but my sublettor doesn't wanna pay for a landline he won't use. which is fair.
@catlady- what you want kind of exists, but it's enormously expensive.
You could get an unlocked gsm phone, and get prepaid cards for each country you visit, but this would mean a different local number every time, and would vary wildly in price from country to country, with some places requiring a minimum payment to start up a line/buy a sim card for that company.
What you want is a call forwarding service. or something like that. where you can pick up voicemail as you go and keep the same phone number. Most north american prepaid services can't roam outside of north america, too expensive, too hard to refill.
well, i'd like to spend as little as possible. i don't need anything fancy. except for that works-in-other-countries-without-a-service-plan-here part...
I dunno. I think you can buy an unlocked GSM phone much easier overseas than here. I tried to unlock a phone in Kathmandu and had no luck, but buying a phone there was no problem.
Where are you going, catlady? I'd do a little research. I'm pretty sure if you go to Bangkok first, you could probably find an unlocked phone at MBK for about $50. You don't want anything fancy, and you can pick up a SIMS card for each country.
I'm pretty sure you can find an unlocked anything in Bangkok for about $50.
Art: True. Pussy shoot ping-pong was about $15 when I was there.
I passed. Even my curiosity isn't that morbid.
Anyway, MBK is the place to go for illicit electronics.
I thought the pre-paid card system in Nepal was the easiest thing.
Aartaud: Nice! I bet the local take on Whack-A-Mole was similarly inspired.
I have to admit, Pussy Shoot Banana would be something I might drop some coin to see.
For the medical interest.
i need to find my friend andrew's fabulous 'thai sex club story' blog post and get you guys the url...
@madame: ah, yes, sim card is the term i've heard the europeans use...
hmmm...sounds like it's much harder than i was originally led to believe.
@aartaud: yes, bangkok is my first stop, so it sounds like that's my best bet.
one night makes a hard man humble, you know. what about a hard man with $15 and a banana...?
Pussy Shoot Banana is like the Vaginal Olympics. It's like running a 9.9 100 meters.
It's not something you'd want to see everyday, but just to marvel at.
Art: That video would probably be about Phnom Penh nowadays.
oh yes we did...i'm afraid i am reviving that. it's hard not to hear those lyrics when talk of bangkok arises. which with me it does a lot lately.
I'm getting an iphone.
This information is of no use to you, but I'm pretty stoked about it.
Cat: How could anybody be leery after Pussy Shoot Banana enters a conversation?
@j2: good for you.
will an iphone not do for me what i need?
will nothing?
catlady: MBK is 8 floors of shopping goodness in Bangkok. About 3 floors are electronics, pirated software, etc.
One floor is for food. Glorious food.
Pussy Shoot Banana, Pali Shoot Moose is the name of my new punk band.
food glorious food. i'm pretty sure already that that will be my favorite part of thailand.
It's really weird to watch Republicans at the RNC attempting to rock out to Sly Stone's "Everyday People".
Weird as in stop it.
catlady: MBK is good for that. It's a nice easy transition to the outdoor food markets.
that is a perfect band name, aartaud. (credit where it's due to art's folks band, of course)
IS THAT WHO MYSTERIOUS OOM MAO MAO IS? You have no idea how relieved I am.
I dunno... it might. But it's AT&T exclusive so you might not even be able to use it outside the country.
EDIT: Actually I just looked it up.. you have to call them to enable international roaming and then it costs at least a dollar a minute for whatever country you're in.
...this is the first time I've seen somebody refer to him as aartaud, hence my surprise. But I guess we run in different circles, you and I
kinda like when i was carlton your doorman people still only called me catlady.
though when i am catlady most people seem to call me mia...
have i found the perfect balance with catlady von doom (which is what fujimoto/khaaaaansumating/etc randomly christened me one night)? hmm....
@j2: monopolistic bastages. forget that.
@scurv: well, i more often than not don't run at all these days. but soon enough we shall inhabit the same circle, the lovely bay area one.
u can score cheap unlocked GSM phones online.. make sure it's atleast a tri band (with the 900 freq and not the 850).
by cheap i mean phones that are usually 3 to 4 years old. I think the erricsson T610 is about 25 new (have not looked in a while)
so anyway, pussies shooting objects aside, my wish to keep my phone number with me while traveling is pretty much a no-go unless i suddenly become super-rich or something, right?
unless you have a dual sim card phone.. and those I have not played with
scurvy: Why are you relieved? Isn't the East Bay a wonderful place to live?
catlady: Yeah, I think that a single phone number might be tough.
i come and go..
wait that sounded wrong...
been here since it started.. then my real life happened.. now i am back.. i guess....
guess everyone is back... recognize a lot of names but see a lot of new people as well.. or i am just getting old
single phone number might be doable if you can forward your number to all the new cell numbers you receive as you get new cards... or u can just get a calling card and check voicemails
yeah i don't care how old a phone is. they're all newfangled to me. i just need it to work.
so, what is this dual sim of which you speak?
you could get a phone or an adapter to take 2 sim cards. basically it can have 2 numbers and 2 services. I don't think any real manufacturer made a proper dual sim phone for cheap. there are ones on ebay that are 100% chinese goods.. and those can be challenging to use.
maybe if i find anything more useful about the adapters i will chime in later on. The dual sim adapters are big but not sure if they worked.

what kind of phone is it?
