"we always here that mac techs eventually just say to reformat" Is that your experience with Apple tech support? Or am I just an anomaly?

that is the easy answer not only to macs, but PCs too.
when I did tech support I always used reformat as a last option, while my colleges would use it as a first option. my stance was, and still is preferences are a bitch to set up, and while you might not know it now; getting your programs, settings, and the like the way you like it could take weeks, if not months.
No. The one time I ever called Apple for tech support, it was after my helpdesk coworkers, several of them complete Mac gurus, had given up. They walked me through reinstalling the OS and restoring my old files. Never was there talk of reformatting.
If you're not zeroing your hard drive every 20 minutes, you're just missing out on all the

excitement pass you by.

Or have the times I've been told to reformat (regardless of OS) just made sense to me because it's the next logical step in the progression of trying to fix my computer?
