I get my first real paycheck ever today. Most of it is already spent, but I want to reward myself with something. Any ideas under $100?

It should be something permanent. New clothes or something for the house since I own practically no furniture or furnishings.
I need to write up my budget because the first thing I have to do is buy a plane ticket to NYC for my visit every other month ;).
A good ol' Southern meal involves pork, usually, either in the flesh of swine or lard that is put into something tasty.
@twigby: Depends on the region of the south, but I'm partial to gumbo, fried catfish and shrimp, jambalaya, and pecan pie.
@AArtaud: Something for the house? Hmmm...probably got to be blinds, cheap curtains, or a kitchen appliance.
val: If only I had those food choices here in Georgia. I have something called Brunswick stew, which is alright, and vinegary BBQ, which is also alright.
Not the same though. Oh well, once I buy a car, I probably won't have any pin money this go-round.
Fuck you, Corey. I preferred the life of the mind over filthy lucre, ok?
I keep my lucre well-cleaned.
I don't know your house situation, but for under a hundred bucks, I bought a chair at the thrift, chalkboard paint to cover my fridge, a new clock, a footstool, a couple of small piece of art, and some new magnets. Made the house feel more home. Again. Finally.
I'm merely surprised that you've been able to sustain yourself without toiling for so long.
Oh, I've had jobs, just never a job that just barely covered the bills.
10 years as a graduate student isn't luxurious. I got paid (mostly) to study, but not well.
Is there a book or two you've just been hankerin' for? Well, go for it!
I should buy something besides books. I'm not Erasmus. I do require more than the minimum in food and clothing.
At least I think so. It's been a while.
I might frame some art that I have. That's luxurious.
Hell yea!
It's such a good feeling isn't it? I'm finally looking for my first 'real job' as well. When I get that first paycheck, I won't know what to do with it.
Also, how about an ipod shuffle? Go crazy at the thrift store! Or a really nice piece of furniture? I found this website the other day and went gaga www.lushpad.com
@Oom Mao Mao: C'mon! You know you wanna buy an exorbitant Tibetan dictionary! All the other kids are doing it!
Another idea: get $100 in ones. Roll around in your lucre for a while, cackling madly as you do so.
katy: I'm gonna check out lushpad.com for sure.
fuz: I bought the most expensive Tibetan dictionary there is! Wait... I forgot... there is this:
The 16 volume Tibetan-Sanskrit dictionary!

A little too expensive this first paycheck, but it's on the list.
I think I need a couch first though.
I liked the lucre idea. I could do it naked since for the first time almost ever, I have no roommates! Ah, naked, decadent, moneyed bliss.
An extreme liberal who's never earned a real paycheck by the time they were 30.
How am I not shocked.
Fuck you, Namrok. I'm almost 39, and yes, I've earned paychecks before. Just not one that didn't just cover the bills.
But I've got joy.
And extreme contempt for you.
What a second. When did I say I was an extreme liberal? Did I ever say that? I was pointing out that McCain should have held responsible for his actions and incompetency in my other thread.
I would've thought that would have resonated with a technocrat libertarian like yourself, Namrok. I believe I'm going to have you to cite chapter and verse to prove that I'm an extreme liberal, for I deny such a charge.
I'm a Mickey Maoist.
I'm trying to think of what I treated myself to with my first paycheck at my current job over a year ago. Hmm. After covering bills (which were all very late, mind you, after having been laid off for months), I think I ran out to Anthropologie and bought a new blouse.
I hate that I am so materialistic sometimes. :
Oom Mao Mao, where do you live? I can suggest something, but I can't remember if you're local (San Francisco)...
Belle: I'm in a small town in Georgia. I just starting teaching here at a college so shopping is extremely limited.
But there is the Internet!
Ah! Got it. Something for the house, then, from etsy.com. I love that site. Check it out! One day I hope to make things and sell them on there.
Aartaud, I am sensing some jealousy that you managed to BE PAID (however modestly) TO GET OFFICIALLY SMART. Like smart enough to BE PAID to try and make other people smart.
Have you considered something nice for the kitchen, do you have a cast iron skillet? I'm in the market for a nice big 12 inch skillet, for cornbread and other delicious things.
As a seller on etsy, I have to second the suggestion, you can find lots of wonderful original art there, usually quite reasonably priced.
Oh, and HI! congratulations on the new gig :)

Good ol' Southern meal? New book? New CD? New clothes?
