i heard windowsill thyme was tricky, but i give it sun, and water but not too much, and yet it is in a complete state of crisis.

So you're just killing thyme?

I just audibly groaned.

focus, people, this herb's life is on the line, here!

What's it look like right now?

only a few leaves are green.  most of them are more brown/gray, and shriveled.  the whole plant, with the exception of some short segments near the base, looks desiccated and painful.

i heard they don't tolerate too much water, so i tried just giving it a little bit frequently, but there's been no improvement all week.

I can't help you, the same thing happened to my plant and then it died. :(

I have been struggling with a thyme plant all summer. I keep it out on my deck, where it gets plenty of sun and water (with what I believe to be proper drainage). A few days ago, I repotted it, believing perhaps "rootbound" was it's problem and it seems about the same.

it's not doing as well as the basil or the rosemary, but it outlasted the marjoram, sage and the watercress (which truly saddened me, as I was so looking forward to egg and cress sandwiches)

my thyme died when I went away for a weekend and it hit super hot temperatures. :-(

i read that harvesting can be a problem.  apparently it's better to cut than to tear?  because the force can wind up shearing off tiny root hairs and that shocks the plant.  i feel misled by whatever website it was told me that harvesting encourages growth, but did not mention this.

maybe thyme is just finicky.  but sooooooo good.

I think your roots are rotted.

I'm not sure how saveable it is at this point. Most likely, they're not really 'breathing'. They should be in super light soil, think orchids, with not much water. I'd loosen the soil if possible (add in bark or gravel) and make sure it's getting full sun, especially come winter. If there are bits that are still alive, try transplanting those to start a new one before it's too late!

i hear ya.

it's just a little potted plant.  probably easier to start over.  i'm glad plants don't have nervous systems to feel pain.

le_sacre said, (75 days ago)

it never came back.  i just finished eating its desiccated corpse.

kmon said, (75 days ago)

At the least, it was yummy.

true.  most of it i didn't even put on anything--i just ate it.  i felt like a cat.
