I'm thinking about going to bartending school.

@lamman: I thought about it. It would combine my love of helping people and creating a safer community with my love of whomping on minorities.
I have been thinking of the same thing for a while. But those schools are like $500 or something and I have no money. NO MONEY.
@Dr. Awkward: I don't understand why there are degree programs that can't get you a job.
Seems like a waste of money for something you could learn on your own.
I charmed the girl I was talking to on the phone from the place and she knocked off 500 bucks from what I would have had to pay. So it would be 300 total for the two weeks of training and the super awesome job placement.
i already have a ton of restuarant experience. I could probably just get a job as a barback and go up from there. But just thinking about working in another restaurant is making me want to die.
I have a bunch of serving and bartending experience, but I live in Los Angeles, so I also need tits and a headshot to stand any chance at landing a job.
I did one of these. It was a semi-shady set up (they didn't have a blender to teach frozen drinks, for instance). We practiced drinks by using colored water in bottles. I had tons of fun since my best friend was with me, but neither of us got a job from it. Most places hire by either 1) experience in the industry or 2) knowing someone who owns the bar.
But - I can make 20 drinks with garnish in 20 minutes, no mistakes. It makes a great party trick.
My mom has been a bartender for 26 years now, and she says the best way to go about getting into being a bartender is first getting your liquor license than asking a bartender perhaps at a bar you frequent or know well enough to ask to learn a thing or two from them.
I also think the schools are probably a joke. But in LA? Well I guess you would know better than I.
Your money might be better spent drinking at your favorite local and getting to know the staff there. It really is about who you know. I did it for years, based entirely on the fact that I liked to drink, therefore knew how to make said drinks, and knew the owner.
Let me know when you rise to that which is Spaceland. I will sit at your bar anyday sir.

Mostly just to have access to their job placement program.
