I TOTALLY wanted to spend TWELVE HOURS trying to fix my computer this weekend, instead of doing, I dunno, a mix session. I love the fact that, at this point, my 1994 PowerMacintosh 8500/120 is faster than my 2006 MacBook Pro. FUCK.

System restore from 6 day old backup (Time Machine).
System now continues to run slow. I've learned about Firefox the hard way, though. Seems like it might be time to get a new computer that doesn't totally suck.
Also, free space before archival restore: 4.3 gigs.
Now: 13.35 gigs.
Wonder where I lost 8 gigs.
I've been trying to get a PowerMac G4 re-operational. I'm surprised at how well MacOS runs on a hard drive that's dying from click of death. It'll take forever to boot, and once it's going, it won't do much, but it's amazing that it'll boot from the hard drive at all. Windows XP just throws up a BSoD.
That's weird, see, when my PC is running kinda slow I can just upgrade the ram or wipe the drive. I don't have to buy a whole new one.
On my current system, Firefox hangs and stops everything else not in the foreground. Force quitting doesn't work. Firefox is my normal browser.
No, downloading a new version didn't help. 22.42 seconds. Crash: hang.
If Safari had extensions like Firebug and sensible tab switching commands (Yo, Apple, command-1 should take us back to the first tab, not open the first item in my bookmarks toolbar in the current tab, that's stupid. Fix it, like I said long ago: http://www.mt-olympus.com/apollo/archives/2007/05/24/feature-request-for-safari/ ), I'd use it more. Now, I'm kind of stuck with it until I can unscrew my computer.
@CoreyHart: you don't have to buy a whole new Mac if stuff starts not working. The parts are just as replaceable as with any PC. I'm buying a 120gb Seagate drive for this PowerBook to replace the dying 20gb IBM Travelstar that's in it, and people on the intarwebs have done the same successfully.
@Corey: Osteo's computer is not slow because it needs to be upgraded - there's something seriously wrong with it.
@Osteo: After using laptops almost exclusively for the last 7 years or so, I learned that there is no better way to spend $249 than for AppleCare. If for nothing other than for to get the slot-loading DVD drive replaced once a year (those things are notoriously flakey), it's worth it. The only problem is there are no user serviceable parts, so you have to go without for a week (although, there's a authorized Apple service center nearby that will do a one-day turnaround for $75, which is not bad).
As for the missing data - Time Machine doesn't, by default, backup things that are stored in resizable disk images - like iDisk volumes or VM drives. That's because it only sees those volumes as a single file and would have to backup the entire thing everytime a single file on it were to change. That's more than likely what's missing. That and a shitload of cache files that were cluttering your disk.
I've not been having good luck with Safari (slower than snot) or Firefox (crash-riffic) as of late.
I'd assume you've done the standard quick fixes (trashing the prefs on Firefox, emptying the caches). My other suggestion (besides going to the Apple Store) would be to try Opera…I'm not sold on it, and it doesn't play well with every web site, but I've found it quite zippy overall.
On Friday, my computer started crashing. I worked on it for twelve hours this weekend and finally got it to the point where it kind of runs. No hardware has changed since last week.
The last time my computer failed, it was a PowerBook G4 12". I paid the $375 whatever's-wrong-fix-it fee at Apple. They decided I'd spilled water on the computer and requested an additional $1340 to replace the motherboard (the video card failed and since it's on the motherboard, that took out the motherboard, too). Everything's upgraded. The OS is as new as it gets.
It's just that something screwy is going on with this laptop. The PBG4's video card failed after 18 months. Things are screwy with this one, too, after about two years. My old iBook is still running 7 years after I bought it. The 8500/120, upgraded to 233 MHz, still works.
It's probably just time to replace this behemoth. But, that shit never happens when I have $12,500 in my checking account. It only happens after tax man, dentist, and other bills poon me for all my cash. Time to check with my Apple people about special sales.
You didn't actually pay the $1340 to have the G4 fixed, did you? You could buy a whole new MacBook for not much more than that.
No. I told the guy on the phone that his tech was a lazy fuck and that he should send me back my laptop posthaste.

how?
