Each user is a record in the database. Within that record is contained the user's privacy preferences (in this case the public profile view is set to off) and a listing of user IDs deemed as friends.

When you (assuming you're not their friend) or Google (spidering) goes to pull up that profile a few things are asked by the MySpace machine.

1. Is the request for the profile an open session from a logged in user

If "YES"

2. Is this request coming from a user ID related to the user whose privacy settings are set to restricted.

if "YES"

MySpace will then compile a "profile page" with all their info and it will appear normal to you.

These pages DO NOT exist without compilation. So, it's not like you're just requesting a pre-compiled page with access restriction.

the robots.txt also doesn't allow the caching of pages anymore I believe so it's unlikely that you're gonna pull up a snapshot of the user's page if Google spidered it a month ago

They have lots of DB debris on MySpace at times, which I surmise is due to the hasty implementation of new features. I recall cancelling an old profile of mine with user ID of like 21398. I could read my old blog posts (recipes) for about a year after I killed the profile.

They'd also neglect to lock-down stuff like album access and blog access when you would do privacy changes, but like I said before, their binaries are all insecure. The privacy thing only works on process flow asking whether someone has rights to have YOUR info from the DB compiled into a page.

I keep two myspace profiles, too. One for the band, and one that I log into every six months or so just to delete the backlog of whorebot friend requests. I could probably do without that second one...

@pepper: there used to a site floating around here (maybe consu) that would let you look at the photos on private profiles. but I didn't bookmark it, so I don't really remember what it was... =( Maybe someone else will tho?

Can't you use www.waybackmachine.com to look up the profile? Maybe it was not private-ed at one point and you'll get lucky.
