So... I saw [REC] yesterday...

FUCKING AWESOME MOVIE.

Alas, Hollywood has ALREADY remade it with lame actors and called it Quarantine.

Do yourself a favor and go watch [REC], and don't watch Quarantine.

By the way, what is the utmost scariest movie you have ever seen?

I need some good horrors.

Scariest movie ever? The Descent.

Ah I keep meaning to rent that. I saw Dog Soldiers a while ago... Pretty decent stuff. Really awesomely freaky horror movies are way too hard to come across these days.

Asia is pretty much the only place that keeps humming out good horrors.

Bah. I'm looking up lists of scariest movies ever and The Exorcist keeps popping up, along with Psycho. PSYCHO?! It's cool but it sure as fuck ain't scary. I can understand back in the day (which is a Wednesday by the way) when it came out, it would've been really shocking but people can't still think it's scary surely...

well, before you bag on QUARANTINE, may i hardily recommend the directors' previous movie, THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES

deeply unsettling, and expertly made on a budget (and would be/is scary regardless of budget)

hopefully you'll see it in a theater, if MGM can get their shit together

also, i saw REC, too, and it was pretty good. though it'd been a bit over-sold to me. expecations can do that to you...

also, Jaume Balaguero, who co-directed REC, did a movie called THE NAMELESS that's pretty creepy. more like THE ORPHANAGE than pure gory horror, but well worth watching nonetheless

and good call on THE DESCENT. excellent.

I hated that god damned movie. I can sit through any other horror and not flinch, but something about vast dark expanses filled with creature things behind me just creeps me the fuck out.

it worked on a few levels, i thought:

the all-female cast/dynamic was cool

the claustrophobia of the situation - the sound design, the tight spaces - was really creepy

and then the creatures showed up, and it worked well as a horror film

check out CREEP. i've seen it three times. it's flawed in places, but like The Descent, good atmosphere, mood, keeps you engrossed. Franka Potente's in it (from Run Lola Run)

i saw one recently called POP SKULL that's a total indie, and pretty (literally) mindblowing. it felt like an indie drama with horror/psychological thriller elements wended thru.

and, one more: THE SIGNAL. the middle of the movie doesn't work so well for me, but it's pretty well made and effective. more thought-provoking and entertaining than truly shocking though

Ah! OMG Creep is awesome! That's the one in the subway aye?

Garak said, (108 days ago)

yeah

subway horror often works for me, dunno why...

the scene in Am. Werewolf in the tube was really effective and memorable

there's one from the early 80's, about underground cannibalism/homeless people...Red Meat or something like that. never seen it but heard it was pretty good.

the Nameless (a.k.a. Los Sin Nombre)

Garak said, (108 days ago)

THE NAMELESS was pretty good; a little narratively hollow, but really well directed - definitely creepie and more atmospheric than most American generic teen slasher horror or THE RING ripoffs

Coin-Operated Boy said, (108 days ago)

I like The Nameless and Darkness. I'm starting to like this guy who driected these... as well he directed [REC]

Garak said, (108 days ago)

Jaume Balaguero. yeah, he's pretty talented, i think

Garak said, (108 days ago)

actually my review of The Nameless was meant for THE ABANDONED

i got the two confused for a second...
