Why would you rent textbooks?

Especially when you can find them elsewhere for cheaper than the rental feE?

I guess buying textbooks has such a bad reputation among naive college students that some people are bound to believe renting textbooks is the clear alternative.

Oh, um, I just searched all of my old text books-- trust me, when you're spending $1000 a year JUST in textbooks, renting one for $43 seems like a beautiful alternative.

You can't buy them in a used bookstore for that cheap. This is totally a legit thing.

It just seems like they would have to have a way of getting the textbooks for cheap themselves. With all of the new editions that are coming out all of the time it seems that they wouldn't get too much use out of a single book.

Textbooks are really unreasonably expensive. And chances are you're only using it for a semester. Rented books, used books. If you can get away with it, I say go to.

But think about it--- they buy them for say, $200 at a second hand shop or even new for full price, they will easily pay it off over the course of even a year. Trust me, when the minimum price for just one of your textbooks is $300, it makes sense. I wouldn't say the same if your texts were only like, $30-100, but when you're getting in the bigger ones, where recent editions don't necessarily make that much of difference, this is such a smart choice.

That's true, but ridiculous prices aside, I kind of like keeping certain textbooks. I mean I forget most of the stuff I learn in classes anyway and I find it's nice to have something to refer to later on. Well there are always notes but I'm not a very good note-taker.

Hrm. Mine aren't quite *that* expensive new. I'm taking two classes this semester, and one book new is $112~ and the other is $140~. I've found both on websites as used, for $30-40. Then I'll turn around after the semester and sell them both for $70~ each on amazon. People pay way too much for used books on amazon.

Oh, and the rental for those books? $60-70.

A friend of mine never bought books. He just studied with hot women in his classes.
