Are too many people going to college? Not enough?

http://inrethinking.blogspot.com/2008/07/rant-how-do-we-determine-if-too-many.html

Link goes back to my blog, but as always I'd rather hear what you have to say whether you read it or not. I'm on the nutcase conservative elitist tangent, but I could be persuaded we should drag everyone into college.

I totally agree with you.
I am thinking about going back to school right? Well at the same time I realize that a degree means nothing to me. College is not based on academic merit, it's based on availability and money. If you got the money and the time, you get a degree. WTF?

@stillsleeping - I mean, I want everyone to have the opportunity, that's for sure. But I also don't think the opportunity is for everyone, and I wish there were a way to make the decision easier.

Furthermore: the corporate tackiness of the ritual of going to college is suffocating, when all is said and done.

well I think that the criteria of college is being thrown out the window. Purposeful study is not happening except perhaps by those pursuing higher degrees. I feel totally jaded by my college experiences. I sincerely would like to finish, not because I even need a degree to make it in life, but rather because I really love English Literature. I enjoy going to class and writing papers. But unfortunately I may never finish(she my post)
I know so many people that complain because they have advanced degrees in social work, and they make no money. Well la de da. I mean look at Dr.'s. Back in the day they didn't become a doctor because of the money, they would become dr's because it was their life calling. Now its just a business, everything in this freaking country is a business, and we are only happy if we have enough money to buy buy buy and consume consume consume. I mean we talk about the whole puritan work ethic/capitalism, but we threw the baby out with the bathwater a loooong time ago.(to be cliche)
People have lost the idea of purpose in work. I could go on and on and on...

back in the day it didn't cost 6 figures to get your medical degree. paying off student loans isn't easy.

@Cocktails: Agreed. In some ways, it would be a lot better if government just provided education outright.

Well, you can't really complain about making no money if you study a field that is not a high paying field. I mean, I have a BA in film but I work in tech to make a living.
