We had been waiting for it all week. The heat had been overbearing, oppressive; the air was so heavy with humidity that walking felt more like swimming.
Tonight, we were out shopping for travel gear when it began. As we left the store, the sky was churning, spitting out great big bolts of electrical energy. We were properly threatened by the awesome display. “Should we wait inside?”
Before we could decide, the downpour came, and there we were on the sidewalk, squealing and fumbling with our umbrellas. The umbrellas, of course, were useless against the torrent; Yana’s turned inside-out, and mine simply collapsed in on itself. We yelped and ran in circles. It was liquid chaos.
Then we did the only thing we could do: we ran for cover. It was too late, though - by the time we found refuge in the back hallway of some swanky apartment complex, we were drenched through to the very last layers of clothing.
We looked at each other and lost it, collapsing on the floor in giggles. There we were, shivering, soaked, stranded in a hallway - and suddenly, there was nothing funnier.
I’m so excited to be going to Africa with this girl.
