Ever Google your name and get REALLY freaked out by all of the pages and pages of stuff people can find out about you?
Replies
Yeah, I do that from time to time, but I'm not freaked out or anything, because I know that most of those things are here for a reason.
:-)
Like my LinkedIn profile, some non-threatening/non-perv comments and all that good stuff.
@Sven: Yeah, I thought about that. Goodness. I should start to watch what I say more often.
Maybe even curse less? :(
Not me! When I google "Kyle Smith" far more important Kyle Smith's come up. Mostly this one film critic. I think I might be his bizarro version actually. Every movie he hates, I love, and vice versa.
Thing is, there's a lot of background noise since both my given name and the name I go by are pretty common.
Don't put your name on anything that you don't want your boss/interviewer to see.
Its that simple...
We'll it's not that I'm ashamed of it, really... but you could google my name and find out what activities I was involved in as a Penn Undergrad, what t-shirts I've bought from Threadless, who my Twitter friends are, and which songs I like according to Last.fm.
It's just... to much.
yeah that's why i don't use my last name for anything ... i show up mostly in stuff related to the labs i used to work in, and that stupid fucking video on youtube that my friend REMOVED my last name from ,but google hasn't caught up yet.
it is kind of strainge. what service shows what shirts you bought from threadless.. i kind of want that! hah
I fortunate/unfortunate enough to share a name with a semi-famous person. Their results drown mine out!
I was only freaked out when I entered my name with no spaces and this other guy with the same name had an account on some site called "iwanttobeapornstar.com" featuring pictures of his deformed shillelagh penis.
I've been basically erased from Google by some 13 year old kite surfer.
this is why I don't mention my place of employment - they crack down REAL quick. the stuff they say I can't "have" because of all the regulations with the NCAA is ridiculous.
@Giu: Hey, I just changed it. Thanks.
That's what scares me. I don't think of stupid shit like that.
Michelle -- hahahaahhasdlfkgsd,fj aint no job in the WOOOORLD gonna make me drop the f-bomb less :'C
aaahahah
Actually yeah, I don't use my real last name on anything, except for my real facebook. But I have almost NOTHING on facebook so I'm not worried really.
A site that I used to use a lot back in the day was REALLY REALLY googleable, to the point where I started spelling my name backwards. haha.
Another tip: go into facebook's privacy settings, and make it so your profile doesn't come up in search engines. it's in there somewhere.
I'm super protective of using my first name last name on any websites. If I can control it at all, it's not going up there. So most of the stuff on me is old college writings, my work website, and some race results. Also, some "short hispanic woman" with my name has a blog, so she confuses things!
I just don't use my real name on websites like these. It's on facebook yeah, but there's nothing embarrassing on there.
A lot of people have my name. Apparently I'm a veteran, a fire chief, an oil-rig worker, a pilot, and a black man.
On the other hand, if you search skipbreakfast....
Potato is not my real last name fortunately ... or is that UNFORTUNATELY?
I'm pretty much the only person in the world with my first and last name. so, whatever.
I have come to accept that my web-based mistakes in the 90's, 00's... and beyond will be with us all until the inevitable end of the internet / heat death of the universe.
Reasons why I'm really googleable - my music, my fiction/reading one of my short stories ended up in links for a ton of podcasts [our dept likes to pimp us out], and from lacrosse.
I have one of the most common names ever, but I don't really use it very much on the internet, so I don't have much to worry about. It used to freak me out when I'd search for iceowl, but it seems that there are many other people and things on teh intarwebs called iceowl, so I guess I don't have that to worry about much anymore either.
I'm actually kind of excited that one of the first things that comes up is my IMDB page (PS> my STARmeter is up 20% since last week!) and another early page that comes up is a "Cannes festival award winning film" page. But one of the more popular pages that comes up is for some kid with my first and last name who killed himself on ICQ (hopefully for being on ICQ). That's not as cool.
mm, yes. you can find out where i've been published, where i went to middle and high school, where i went to grad school, what my undergrad/grad research was in, where my photos are, AND all the stupid shit i've said all over the internet.
Yeah.. having a last name that is a really common word makes me pretty much unsearchable.. they'd have to know my online name(s).
Long before you find any listings for me, you'll be reading about the singer from Korn, and then perhaps a bit about how it's also Q-Tip's real name.
NO! there's some stupid australian olympic swimmer with the same name. also a popular linux developer and a photographer. when i google just my name without 'hexo-anything' i can't find myself.

yes, and no... Thankfully I haven't done too many things online that i'm ashamed of..
