You should read Henri Alleg's "The Question." Get the one with Sartre's preface--that alone is worth reading.
(Alleg was a man who was caught and tortured by French paratroopers during the Algier war. Waterboarding was used on him by his torturers AFTER he had already resisted electric shock, etc, as one of the more intensive techniques.)
