Heya geek kids - my coworker just upgraded her system to XP, and now she can't connect to the server. My tech guy says that she needs new network drivers, but that he won't have time to look at it til monday. Is this something I can do on my own, and if so, how?

yes, download the drivers, install them, reboot

you need to find out what network card you have. if it's something ike an hp or dell you should be able to go to the website, find the model and all the drviers for it

also is this a personal or work pc? some businesses set up the pc so only people with admin rights can install software, so if that's the case you maybe stuck with waiting for the tech

If she can't connect though, you may have to download it on a working computer and put it on a USB stick or something to move the file.

Umm.. she just upgraded to XP? Heh. 10 years too late.

@twigby: how do I find out what kind of network card she's got? It's a work PC, but I have the tech guys login & pw - should I just reboot and login as him?

@pt: yup, I can do that.

@ghostie: I know. Our tech dept. is STELLAR that way. :(

START - Accessories - System Tools - System Information

expand "Components" (in the left pane), expand "Network," click on Adapter

I suggest using Linux. You can run it straight off the DVD or a USB key, without installing it to the hard drive. I'm partial to Fedora myself, but Ubuntu is well known for being friendly to the n00bs.

I'm a retard....

get someone to download it for you on another pc and put it on a usb key

Okay, I looked under Components/Network, and I've got a list of four diff. things - the bottom three are WANs, and the top one is a RAS Async Adapter.

Is a network adapter the same as a network card?

Corey Hart said, (194 days ago)

Yep

Corey Hart said, (194 days ago)

is it a regular network card or is it a wireless card?

does she still have the xp install disc?

flyingfishstick said, (194 days ago)

@Corey - regular network car. And yes, she's still got the XP upgrade disk

Corey Hart said, (194 days ago)

often times the xp disc will have drivers for generic network cards.

Is the card super old or something?

flyingfishstick said, (194 days ago)

dunno. From 2006 at least; is that old?

El Indio said, (194 days ago)

what brand is the adapter? like twigs said, determine the brand, download drivers via the internet, burn to a cd or put on a usb drive, transfer to other comp.

wait, can you take a screenshot with your system info maximized (showing list of adapters in the right pane) and show us?

flyingfishstick said, (194 days ago)

I will try. Back soon.

El Indio said, (194 days ago)

ok, that might not work, the whole screenshot idea. nm.

El Indio said, (194 days ago)

START - Accessories - System Tools - System Information
expand "Components" (in the left pane), expand "Network," click on Adapter

AND THEN,

type out the NAMES of all of the listed adapters for us (in the right pane)

Corey Hart said, (194 days ago)

@ffs: 2006 is not old.

Try going to:

control panel > device manager > network adapters

there should be an item with a yellow alert symbol next to it. (assuming that the drivers aren't installed for the adapter)

right click on that and go to properties.

go to the drivers tab and click update driver

make sure the XP cd is in the drive and run through the wizard.

have it search for drivers, and make sure it searches the disc drive that the XP cd is in.

if that doesn't work, you'll probably have to grab the drivers from the manufacturer's site like everyone else is saying.

flyingfishstick said, (194 days ago)

Damn, tech guy came while I was grabbing a sammich. Bastard fixed it without talking to me at all.

Now, I understand that talking to non-tech people can be draining, but really - would it have killed him to show me what the deal was? Grrrr!

Thanks for all of your help, guys.

Corey Hart said, (194 days ago)

It could have been a simple network issue. If your network uses internal static IP addresses, that would be lost in the upgrade. Can't really say for sure what it was, though.

good call, Corey. im already forgetting shit.
