the tagline is "The End Is Near", which I believe would qualify as truth in advertising

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

I'm a bit leery of clicking on anything called "largeassets" at work, man.

Garak said, (197 days ago)

it's saying something that Fox has decided not to do this movie, and let Lionsgate release it.

Garak said, (197 days ago)

see the tag - it's safe for work...but not safe for those who favor genuinely funny film comedy, clever gags, etc.

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

Wait, I just read the tags. No way in hell I'm watching this.

I'm waiting to see someone make "Parody Movie" out of footage from these creators OD-ing in some random crack house.

Garak said, (197 days ago)

i love how the conceit is a "spoof" of disaster movies....

and there's virtually nothing disaster-ish going on in the trailer, it's all randomly assembled nods to current movies. like, so current some of them haven't even come out.

"Hey, let's 'spoof' HANCOCK!"

what if HANCOCK is a total dud, and thus thoroughly forgotten by August?

that'd be like....spoofing HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE. anyone remember HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE? No? I didn't think so...

the way i get by said, (197 days ago)

i rememeber hollywood homicide!

man, who would've though josh hartnett and harrison ford could've FAILED?

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

So, how does this shit keep getting MADE?

fuznotfuz said, (197 days ago)

@ABNA: People keep going to see it. And they're going to see it because it provides the humor in easily digestible chunks, with bite size pop cultural references galore.

Garak said, (197 days ago)

it frustrates me to no end to have to explain the difference to certain people between stuff like AIRPLANE! or THE NAKED GUN and this shyte

some people are just generally dismissive of spoofy comedy. i loved it growing up - the Zucker Brothers were big influences on me. (granted, theyv'e sort of lost their touch now)

but i think AIRPLANE! is one of the funniest movies ever made; but it was the approach that made it so great -- deadpan, dry, hiring naturally dramatic actors to play funny characters, etc.

this is just....as you say, throwing things in a pop culture blender and going, "hey, remember that thing? well, here it is again!!"

painful, not just that these keep getting made, but that people go to see them. thus ensuring the two writer-directors get to keep making films. and, i'm assuming, fistfuls of cash.

sad.

fuznotfuz said, (197 days ago)

@Garak: I blame YouTube. And Jesus. Mostly YouTube.

Actually, I felt the trailer for The Love Guru was just as bad. I'm more than a little pleased it's currently tanking at the box office right now.

Gar, I read this the other day, and perhaps it articulates what you're trying to say...

"A certain amount of audience flattery goes into a spoof. Spoofs make audiences laugh in part because they feel in the know for getting whatever reference is being thrown out there for ridicule. More often than not, these references tend to be too obvious and pandering, and in the worst cases, spoof filmmakers don't even bother crafting much of a gag about them; they merely want to congratulate viewers for being hip to the source material ostensibly being parodied. That's why the cottage industry of Jason Friedberg/Aaron Seltzer spoofs like Date Movie, Epic Movie, and Meet The Spartans is the worst thing going in comedy right now: Winking at the audience for picking up on nods to 300, Meet The Parents, Pirates Of The Caribbean, and other such obscurities is about as base as it gets.

Wet Hot American Summer flatters its audience just like any other spoof, but the fact that its targets are so narrow and particular makes it perversely inspired...."

Here is the rest of it: http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/the_new_cult_canon_wet_hot

soulcamp said, (197 days ago)

I'm sorry, as bad as that is, it can't really compare to this:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/universal/wanted/large/final.html

That may very well turn out to be the worst movie ever conceived.

Garak said, (197 days ago)

the Youtube/myspace generation thing does have something to do with it...

re: WANTED - i dunno, i'm 50-50. it could either be mindblowingly amazing/fun, or just jaw-droppingly/over-the-top shitty. i can't tell. (i was not a big NIGHTWATCH fan, it was too much for me) i've heard about 4, 5 reviews of WANTED and they're, again, 50-50. some thought it was the best action movie in years, the rest thought it was terrible. i reserve judgement...

as for LOVE GURU, i personally have no beef w/Mike Meyers, though my interest in/enjoyment of his comedy has dropped significantly since the first AUSTIN POWERS. however, i agree, LOVE GURU looked shitty, and that it's doing bad is probably a good thing. then again, i heard GET SMART isn't all that much better, and that IS making money, so....

Garak said, (197 days ago)

@Jas - yes! precisely my point. and, though it's a bit rough around the edges, i loved WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER.

it's like this story i have told a couple times, of going to the NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE test screening.

there is the running gag in it of the "slow clapper". and i thought it was very funny, very silly. brought back fond memories of LUCAS and other movies like it. and it cracked me up. also, there were one or two very pointed, funny references to 80's-era teen films. and at the end of the movie, the two girls in front of me who were maybe 17, 18 asked me, "Why did you laugh so hard at the clapping thing?" like...they just didn't get what was so funny about it. the worst parts of that film, for me, are the spoofs of then-current rom-coms, like CAN'T HARDLY WAIT or whatever. they were too current, not universal, just kind of generic in their "hey, remember this thing?"ness.

but other stuff in it was classic.

and, of course, the ostensible target audience didn't see what was classic about it, and, i think, enjoyed the more obvious stuff more.

sigh...

i'd be hard-pressed to think of the last spoof i really liked. (parts of Scary movie 3 and 4 - and then AUSTIN POWERS/UNDERCOVER BROTHER, but those weren't spoofs really, so much as affectionate pastiches/throwbacks)

Garak said, (197 days ago)

@danny - big-time. can't wait.

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

I didn't care for 'Wanted' as a book, and hearing about it being sanitized for the screen makes me want to watch it even less. Well, that and the filmmakers' insistence on presenting the calcified remains of Angelina Jolie as some sort of sex bomb.

soulcamp said, (197 days ago)

@Garak: If any of the scenes in the trailer for WANTED are actually in the film itself, I cannot reserve my judgement - it will be the worst thing captured on film since Roland Emmerich last directed someone to point a camera at something.

Now, The Dark Knight - I have high hopes. Same with WALL*E.

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

Wal*E? BLAAAAAH. I'll take my mecha giant and Japanese, thank you.

soulcamp said, (197 days ago)

@Art: Exactly. The scene where she says "he's behind you" and then makes a face that looks like she's taking a her first dump after being constipated for a month - I threw up in my mouth. She's repulsive.

soulcamp said, (197 days ago)

@Art: Has anyone ever hinted that you might be a bit pretentious? ;^p

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

Nobody of consequence, but I'll take it under advisement 8p

scurvyman said, (197 days ago)

Just wanted to say that Wet Hot American Summer is one of my favorite comedies ever, non-parodies included. There is a joke in essentially every shot and at least one out of every three lines of dialog, and the more times you watch it, the better they get

Garak said, (197 days ago)

"back in my day, we called it arts and farts and crafts..."

Skanko said, (197 days ago)

you taste like burger.

Garak said, (197 days ago)

re: WALL-E, my hopes are pretty high, at least as far as they can be for an ani movie.

i have a buddy who's been working on it, and it sounds interesting, that there's little dialogue, and it's mroe about sounds and atmosphere and emotion

ABoyNamedArt said, (197 days ago)

Danny's right. Would Runamuck be in a rom-com? I think not.

scurvyman said, (197 days ago)

I want you inside me. Oh hey what's up? I was just.. from before?

soulcamp said, (197 days ago)

@Garak: If they pull it off, WALL*E could be one of the most interesting pieces of animation ever. I wasn't a huge fan of Ratatouille - I expected a lot better story from the man who created The Incredibles. But 7/8 isn't too bad for a single studio.

Merry JasAsian v2.0 said, (197 days ago)

I really liked both The Incredibles and Ratatouille, though I did wait until DVD for both of the them. I have high hopes for Wall-E.

daisy half-wit said, (197 days ago)

Why did I watch that until the end? Good god. Why do they keep making shitty movies like this that are just a sad, stupid series of SNL sketches?

0guninnayouface0 said, (197 days ago)

the only good movies coming out this year are the following. .
Dark Knight
Pineapple Express
Bruno

that's it

no more

all crap

Garak said, (197 days ago)

Bruno's next May

Dark Knight and Pineapple Express - totally agreed! i love both trailers!

Garak said, (196 days ago)

i agree.

funny, cause here in LA, i don't think many think of it as a "dark horse", but that's because we're constantly pummeled with entertainment stuff, and all my friends are pretty much movie geeks, etc.

but i hope - well, first i hope it's good. then, i also hope it catches on everywhere in the US, as i think it will.

it's directed by one of my favorite Indie guys, David Gordon Green (SNOW ANGELS, ALL THE REAL GIRLS, GEORGE WASHINGTON), doing his first studio film. it worked well for Greg Mattola on SUPERBAD and i want it to work for DGG, too.

that trailer kills....i have played MIA's song like 100 something times since i heard it in the trailer and immediately downloaded -- that trailer/the song use is perfect
