How do you hear about new music?
Replies
Usually, I hear about it from places like this and then I go look up the band and listen to a couple tracks and wonder why everyone is so excited about it. Repeat as necessary.
Pandora Radio is pretty nice. Especially for more "Indy" sorts of stuff.
Otherwise, friend of a friend of a friend crap through myspace, or buying opening band albums at concerts for more famous groups.
I check out what eMusic recommends for me. And yeah Pandora was really helpful for me for a while. Otherwise I rely on my friends.
Working in radio, we get new music all the time, but sadly hardly any of it makes it on-air. However a lot of my friends/coworkers and I get to listen to it anyway.
Also, going to shows is how I used to learn about probably 75% of the music I listen to now.
That is true. Last.fm is like Wikipedia... start on one band and you end up with six others to check out in an evening.
i read pitchfork and other review sites to keep up on current stuff, check out record labels of bands i like to see if there are other artists on there i might like, listen to college radio stations, and watch opening bands at shows i'm going to, And i do mix cd exchanges twice a year with some music nerd friends on a different forum
and pandora is cool too, haven't really delved into last.fm yet
@bizzy: hmm, see I can't go to a random show if there's not at least one band I want to see... I just don't have the patience or stamina. But I guess I see what you mean. I went to Gilles Peterson (spin, I guess, I mean he's a radio DJ so...), and he has this act from LA called THE REBIRTH (look them up now!), and they fucking blew me the fuck away to fuckland!
@Ethan,Bizzy: ok I think I need to get in the last.fm wagon...
but... BUT: my musical tastes, while not super obscure, is certainly not mainstream and popular... so a lot of those "music like this" sites get it so comically wrong...
@Jesse: Regarding shows, that's kinda what I meant. I usually go to see a band I like. But I'm one of those people that usually shows up early enough to catch all of the opening acts, some of which I've ended up liking better than the headliner I paid to see.
elbo.ws which brings you to all the major music blogs
and word of mouth mostly.
I get into these phases where I am finding new bands and downloading all the really good hyped up shit, then for three months get out of the loop and listen to the same three cds over and over. I am into Do I Offend You Yeah?, Santogold and the new Girl Talk right now. Do I Offend You Yeah? is like Bloc Party/Justice if you are into that.
Sometimes while on slsk, I browse the files of people who download off me. I figure they'd have similar tastes.
Pandora, Spin, Rolling Stone, selected issues of Blender (the "1,000 Great Downloads" or whatever issue comes to mind), Citybeat, Aurgasm, and Spinner.com are where I find most newer stuff. Though I happened upon a blog yesterday that featured most of the entries in the Eurovision song contest. The entry from Greece was a passable Timbaland knock-off.
kcrw and my cousin (who knows about everything 5 minutes before the world does)
I get the music feed from stereogum.com for indieish music, I also buy a fair amount blindly from dustygroove.com
I read NME for britpop and, I'm not ashamed to say it, pitchforkmedia sometimes can be a good source.
PITCHFORK AND THE BEST NEW MUSIC ONLY
WELL, MAYBE RECOMMENDED IF IT'S LIKE AN 8.2 OR SOMETHING
sometimes pitchfork really likes stuff that I hate, like noise and weird ambient electronica, but sometimes they're ok.
I like it because my work doesn't block it. ALSO because I can listen to all the Lil Wayne remixes I can handle. Which is a lot.
pandora works for me sometimes...and reading pitchfork, though i rarely agree with their ratings.
The bi-weekly new arrivals email from Aquarius Records is also fucking excellent.
Sometimes I listen to KCRW. Sometimes I discover things on Last.fm. The rest of my discoveries usually come from my boyfriend and his 2000+ album record collection.

MTV is right out. Do people listen to the radio anymore? Podcasts? Some magazines? How and why.
Mainly, how come everyone knows about all these random electro-ish bands and I don't.
