so guess what! in addition to being allergic to eggs and dairy, i am now apparently allergic to bananas, melon, kiwi, avocado and LATEX.

hurricane medina is allergic to kiwi, i always eat it off his plate at restaurants.
@johnny: i do love fruit. thank goodness i'm not allergic to pineapples. that would be HORRIBLE.
@L: those things are all related. it's a latex/fruits syndrome, and it comes on slowly. i never really ate avocado until this year, so i never knew.
@johnny: there is a breakfast place we go to and sometimes it is part of the fruit garnish.
@bizzy: i don't mind so much, i never had one before last year, but the banana/latex part kind of sucks.
Peps, I'm allergic to pineapples in my head, so you can have mine.
Libs, I like your breakfast place. I want to come.
That makes me really sad for you. But kind of perversely glad in a way that we're just friends. Because I want my future life partner to be able to eat kiwi off of my freshly waxed hiney.
Oh. Ok, well yeah the banana thing sucks. And latex... eek. That will definitely be tricky.
But if I had to give up avocados I would probably cry. For serious.
Hmm....are any of those related to the peanut allergy? I saw a news brief a few weeks back that they were close to curing that one. Mayhaps there's hope?
@fujimoto: O_o
@heraldic: most food allergies are similar. peanuts, eggs, dairy, shellfish etc are the top tier... this new development is a secondary allergy.
OK, I think I understand. That begs the question, then, if any "cure" for the primary will also take care of the secondary.

It suggests that food allergy cures are almost a decade away (after FDA approval), but that some of the major breakthroughs have already happened.
@Bizzy: That's what all the guys in the back of the restaurant tell me. ;)
May I ask if you've actually had allergy testing done with a doc or some other medical professional? I only ask because so many people self-diagnose their allergies after reading a few paragraphs from some hippie website and then swear off a whole group of foods for the rest of their life when it might have been something else that were exposed to.
Hey, does a latex allergy limit your costume options in anyway? Just curious.
Non-latex condoms are like twice and expensive and hard to find.
But they exist, and can be mail-ordered in bulk.

WELL! I was going to be horribly sorry about the avocado bit, but it turns out you're not that into them (????????????????). Anyway, via your caps in the original topic title and your comments herein, I've gathered that you're more upset about the latex bit.
I didn't see a response to the earlier question of if that had to do with costumes, but if it has to do with contraception, it's not the end of the world. I've had to work around not allergies, but undesirable reactions to a certain type of condom I was used to using before, and I've found the Internet to be an invaluable resource. (The condom selection at the local sex shops was abysmal, although I bet you have better options in the LA area. Still, maybe not close to your house, and gas prices are no joke these days!) I hopped on condomania.com, a site that I've found to be wonderful in the past, and in their non-latex section there's a listing for Lifestyles Skyn condoms, made of polyisoprene, and only costs $1.24 a condom. It's a few dimes more expensive than the cheapest Lifestyles condoms, and only a few cents more than the average Trojan condoms
@jasasian: i have been clinically diagnosed with the first-tier allergies, and as such have a good idea of what an allergic reaction feels like. i'm going to call my allergist tomorrow to get a new panel done, but i'm fairly sure. i've had good success with food trials before, and knowing that melon, kiwi, banana and avocado are grouped in an allergy bundle and that they ALL make me vom, i feel pretty confident about it.
@scurvs: yeah, it's just such a pain! if i am allergic to latex i'll need a new medical id so doctors will know that too.
Also, CondomMan.com, though I don't think they carry Skyn. But they are cheaper for just about all others.
@ Pepper - Gotcha...good job. I was just thinking about this one gal who i knew that declared herself allergic to soy after an evening or two on the internets.
Are there support groups for people who can't eat guacamole anymore? There should be.
