What's the most disturbing horror film you've ever seen?
Replies
I was thinking more along the lines of ACTUAL horror flicks for me to rent, but I suppose this was inevitable.
any of the rob zombie ones? i hear they're just gorefests
horror movies aren't "my thing" though...
the local paper called the strangers the "no country for old men" of horror flicks, i had to laugh at that desceription...
I love Rob Zombies "House of 1000 Corpses" movies. Good times good times.
I'll watch pretty much anything scary. The wierder the better since I have yet to find a movie that gives me nightmares.
I'm such a wuss when it comes to horror movies. I get scared so easily.
The Ring freaked me the fuck out. I had to cover up my TV in my bedroom for a week after I saw it. I hear the Japanese version is even better/worse but I won't make myself watch it to find out.
@ El - Nothing. The comment was meant for mr. DannySmartass.
@ Lexi - The Ring scares my boyfriend like WHOA. Which cracks me up because it's one of my favorites
Also, the Hills Have Eyes was really gross and disturbing, as was Hostel. I don't reccomend watching those in the same day unless you have a cast-iron stomach.
the exorcist is still the scariest movie of all time for me.
exorcism of emily rose CREEPS me the fuck out. I watched 5 minutes of it over the weekend and I still have to duck my head and run across the hall if the lights are off.
I absolutely love the first "Ring" movie.
But I really don't find scary movies that scary.
To really mess with my head I have to watch strange, low-budget Asian mind-fucks.
I find that Asian movies always tend to be scarier/wierder/freakier than american movies.
Hello Oldboy..I'm referring to you.
THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES is right up there.
twas supposed to come out this Feb., got pushed by MGM til later this year.
it is one of the most unsettling viewing experiences i've ever had
Rob Zombie's films are up there on the disturbo-scale, though they're ultimately undone by some of his dialogue/character choices, i feel.
AUDITION overall isn't so disturbing, but has some MEGA disturbing imagery and moments.
also: this no-budget movie POP SKULL i recently watched is guaranteed to stick with you for a variety of reasons. i dunno if it'll ever see release, cult video maybe.
there's also some italian cannibal-type stuff that's just...icky. but disturbing, certainly. CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST comes to mind. then again, i saw it a a very impressionable 12 years old, and if my brain could vomit, it would have.
It's not really horror (more sci-fi) but 12 Monkeys really disturbed me when I first saw it. I end up inappropriately giggling in most horror movies, so.... ummmm.... again, not horror, technically, but if you have even the slightest fear of inanimate objects coming to life, may I recommend Jan Svankmajer's 'Alice' (his take on Alice in Wonderland). The white rabbit is especially freaky, though I've always found the story a bit frightening.
It. - scared the crap out of me when i was younger. scary clowns.
The Shining. - still scares me.
if you haven't had anyone give away the ending of Fight Club to you that can be disturbing too. Alone. In a dark room in a strange house. Ok, well, under those circumstances, I was disturbed.
Someone told me about [REC] a few weeks ago and made me really want to see it. I'm a sucker for anything with zombies.
Zombies are serious love.
Second one was/is promoted as fact-based, but its not really true - they kinda combined a couple of real stories into one.
City of God was pretty disturbing, but, again, its not a slasher flick, by any means.
i have both REC and POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES on dvd. if y'all lived closer to me, we'd have movie night and i'd invite you over to watch...
POUGHKEEPSIE really is that creepy. but i do not want to oversell it .....but it is really inventive, and smartly made on a low budget. really under-your-skin disturbing.
REC is decent, but i'm sort of zombie'd out so i was expecting more....but it's well made, to be sure.
@garak - i remember the trailer for the poughkeepsie tapes.
@stereotest - see, i've held wolf creek and high tension as two of the more disappointing horror flicks ive seen, but i think it was really only b/c people talked so highly of them they didnt live up to the expectations.
Yeah, John Carpenter's The Thing still holds up for me but I wouldn't say it disturbed me too badly. I definitely second Session 9. Messed up, BIG time! I have a hard time with Dead Alive, too.
agreed; Dead Alive was a hoot! that lawnmower scene! it's right up there w/Evil Dead 2 and Re-Animator for me in terms of "splatstick" masterpieces

when i was a kid, The Thing (the remake)
