Getting Visas for Travel. Anybody know the best way to go?

I went down to the Chinese consulate to get one today and it turns out it's a lot harder than I imagined it would be. Is there a good reason to do it in person? I may try to do it by mail and have them sent to my parents and then have them forward them to me in Europe somewhere.

Is that viable?

Also, some countries let you get them at the airport, and some I might be able to get at consulates or embassies in other countries before I go to the visa-needing countries. Any of that a better idea?

I'm just getting tourist visas, btw. Not student or business or anything.

And the countries that will need visas are Egypt, kenya, Ethiopia, India, and China. later I'll need Australia/NZ, and a few places in South America. It's a shame that the US started charging some countries' citizens $130 for visas so now they reciprocate.

Unless you have two passports, I don't think the "have your parents send it to you in Europe" option is gonna work.

If you're going to Hong Kong, getting a (mainland) China-entry visa there is quite easy, fast and cheap. You can also pay a visa service to get it for you for an extra $100 or so (not cheap, but better than other alternatives.)

most countries you dont need a visa just to visit on holiday

@mycroft: YES that's the kindof info I need, seeing as I was totally oblvious to my needing to actually give them my passport to get a visa.

It looks like I will need to get tourist visas at the airports for Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, and UAE (Dubai) but that India will have to be taken care of in either The Hague or London, depending on where I have time.

I believe Hong Kong doesn't need one for US citizens for 90 days, and I'll take care of the rest of China later on.

I welcome any more visa-related stories anyone might have.
Thanks!

Apparently you can get an electronic one for Australia, for US citizens. Good to know.

seems like you've got it covered. I would plan to be in a city for at least four days if you're going to try to get a visa there and are going to show up in person. Sometimes it's same day service and sometimes not. It may say on the respective websites though.
