Politicians AREN'T Fighters!

What's with all this bullshit talk about politicians being fighters. I just got an email from MoveOn.org claiming that if we know anything about Ted Kennedy, it's that he's a fighter. And we hear all the time about how Hillary is a fighter. Why? Because they give speeches on TV telling people about how important they are? Because they make disparaging remarks about others and their beliefs? Is speaking into a microphone while standing in a guarded room or surrounded by secret service really that tough? Oh, the risks they take. Why, the media might even call them ridiculous, or worse - A LIBERAL. *shudder*

For once, I'd like to see one of these politicians say something and wind up with a mouthful of broken teeth.

hilary is fighting for her political career, ted kennedy is fighting for his life against cancer.

fighter has more than one definition, using secondary definitions is pretty much accepted in all languages.

I hate MoveOn.org. I know it's hard to tell when I'm serious or not, but I think the folks at MoveOn.org hate America.

@C&MI: But how does "fighting" to pass legislation prepare you to battle brain cancer? I know the intended meaning of the usage, but I was just struck by the lax interchange of meanings and the ridiculous overuse of the term when referring to politicians. What's next? Is someone going to claim that Hillary could knock out Oscar De La Hoya in the ring because she has more years experience as a fighter?

I think we and the media have a way of making politicians out to be superhuman sometimes. When in reality, most of them are just as dumb as the kid at Taco Bell who can't figure out how to make change from the $20 and $1 dollar bills you just handed them.

Most really smart people don't get into politics, because they find other, generally more productive ways to utilize their talents. And when one of the smart people decides to actually leave their successful profession to help improve things for others, they are labeled as inexperienced, even crazy, or worse.

@Reamworks: MoveOn.org has lost it's way. They spend far too much time focusing on the wrong issues, and not focusing on the right ones. Their current main story of the day is about getting McCain to fire Charlie Black. Like McCain would be influenced by anyone at MoveOn.org? WTF are they trying to accomplish? No where on their site do they talk about healthcare, public education, or the environment - issues that are really important to most of their members, and the country in general.

I joined their mailing list back in 2004, because they were mostly about organizing anti-war, anti-Bush rallies. Though I never attended one, and I have never donated any money.

I wish they would refocus on issues, as I think they really did pull together a strong, grassroots group of people who could have serious influence. However, I don't see it happening anytime soon, and I'll probably be unsubscribing from their mailing list even sooner.

fight/battle/warrior are all terms overused in english-speaking media. there aren't enough words that convey a sense of conflict and struggle that aren't related to physical confrontation. i mean, hell, even conflict and struggle, two of the more vague terms for that sort of thing, are tied into the physical.

i can't speak for other languages, but media is conveyed by the language it uses. it's very hard to coin new verbs, especially when there are already terms that cover the action. so you might not like it, but it's the way english works.

The unfortunate part for Obama is that the term "fighter" is also alot of people's way of saying "Not a black man."

Political pundits and the media are just plain stupid. They really are. Their dumbed-down for the lowest common denominator coverage of politics is a disgrace to the free press. I saw someone (not from Fox News even) talking about how the fact that removing Saddam Hussein and shifting the balance of power from Sunni to Shiite actually made Iran much stronger, but that the concept was too complex for a Presidential campaign, and that Obama would have to find a different argument to counter McCain's claim that he's better for Israel. Fucking retards.
