The Doctor is an effectively immortal alien who travels through time and paws at young chicks. That's kind of the appeal.

Chrome Raven said, (152 days ago)

also, he's British or something.

wow, that made way more sense then what i got when i stormed into my local comic book emporium and asked this question.

There's these robots with plungers on them trying to kill mankind, but they can't get up stairs.

beckteria said, (152 days ago)

... ok, that sounds more like what the fanboys told me.... more explaining.

M.K. VanBustiemaan said, (152 days ago)

Okay, really, Community Toy said it best.

But, you know, the thing that's cool about him is that unlike every other sci-fi hero ever, the Doctor actually enjoys his adventures. He may occasionally get angry and do bad things, but at the end of the day, he's a really nice, if totally weird, guy.

M.K. VanBustiemaan said, (152 days ago)

As for the aliens with plungers, all you really need to know is that they're the Doctor's long-time enemies, they wiped out his people, and he's driven them to the brink of extinction more than once.

It's basically this guy who allows girls to leave their mundane, stressful or annoying lives to go on an adventure all over the universe, or anywhere in time, and it's pretty damn addictive.

beckteria said, (152 days ago)

oh damn... this is one of those things i am going to start watching isn't it?

henny said, (152 days ago)

Pretty much.

Chrome Raven said, (152 days ago)

it's too late to stop it now actually, Becketeria. It's best not to fight it.

actually I'm a horrible geek because I've never seen the doctor that I can recall (I actually apparently watched it as a kid with my dad, but I can't remember any details)

beckteria said, (152 days ago)

oh balls mahoney.

StubblyWubbly said, (152 days ago)

The Doctor's time machine looks like a police box, which I think is a rather good disguise for a time machine. Also, when he dies, he transforms into a new doctor with the same memories but a different personality and dress sense.

Chrome Raven said, (152 days ago)

you just said balls mahoney.

Which is awesome.

Actually, if you combine Hena's answer with C-Toy's, you might get the best definition. A large part of the Doctor's appeal -- at least in this series -- is that he doesn't "paw" at his companions, which is apparently a bit of a contrast to certain instances in the older series. The new series trades a lot on the chaste/gallant vibe.

And, as Hena says, another part of the character's appeal is that he's "rescuing" these women from otherwise mundane lives. Inevitably, each of them has fallen for the guy so far.

flyingfishstick said, (152 days ago)

Also, Daleks CAN get up the stairs! They can fly now, you know.

ABoyNamedArt said, (152 days ago)

I will say, I was amused by the Daleks shit-talking the hell out of the Cybermen in Season 2.

henny said, (152 days ago)

I think the Ood are fucking ugly.

beckteria said, (152 days ago)

@Chrome Raven , it's my catch phrase.

henny said, (152 days ago)

It's like Zoidberg, but not really.

beckteria said, (152 days ago)

my head is going to pop.... what the tripe is a a sonic screw driver.

ABoyNamedArt said, (152 days ago)

yeah, but the fat monsters were so fucking adorable it makes up for it.

Chrome Raven said, (152 days ago)

I didn't know that. :P

It's really a good show to get into. It just sucks that there's only like, 13 episodes per season.

ABoyNamedArt said, (152 days ago)

I dunno, better 13 good ones than 24 middling ones. I mean, look at the disaster that was Heroes last year.

ABoyNamedArt said, (152 days ago)

Beck: Ok, the redheaded woman who was hanging out with him actually debuted two years ago. And the blonde at the end is VERY important in the grand scheme.

M.K. VanBustiemaan said, (152 days ago)

Wait, no, hold up. I remember that episode. The Doctor is BEING pawed there.

Yes, I am a nerd. Deal with it.

ABoyNamedArt said, (152 days ago)

Wow. one scene in three years and a couple of christmas specials. Clearly, the guy's a sexual predator.

Now, I'm not saying there's not a certain something weird going on in the new series, either. Consider:

1) Each of the four companions has had a mundane/melodramatic family situation going on when they met the Doctor, including an overly "bitchy" mom. Again, as Hena says, each of them has been portrayed as seeing the Doctor as an escape. Hell, Donna admits to not working and just waiting around idly for him to return. No wonder there's people grumbling that Sally Sparrow would've made a better Companion.

2) Jack Harkness has, to date, been the only recurring male character on the show who hasn't been either a villain or a schmuck. We all liked Mickey, sure, but the guy was written as a chump from day one. Adam, who Rose started to fancy, was written off after one episode because of his human greed. Pete Tyler was a device to separate Rose from the Tenth Doctor. And Martha's dad was barely consequential.

3) The biggest complaint I've heard about this series from the older guard is, the show has taken on aspects of a Harlequin novel. As my friend Albert put it, "He needs to travel with a dude and do cool shit." Indeed, a little Bill & Ted flavor couldn't hurt things, could it?

henny said, (152 days ago)

@CT: That was Rose when Rose wasn't Rose, so that totally doesn't count. All kisses that were exchanged in the Doctor Who series were kisses for Time Lord to Human purposes.
