Do eyeglasses get you going?
http://wurm.laughingsquid.net/es/bbs/threads/45.htmlOMFG you guys. I was checking my Flickr stats (did you know they do like a whole referrer report on all of your photos, if you ask for it? Sweet), and my views had enormously spiked, thanks to what is just a stupid photo demonstrating my new glasses. And you've seen it! It's nothing special! It's my Go Team avatar!
And I followed the referrer link -- nervously, because if people are clicking on something to get to your website or photo, it's invariably in the context of Something Bad -- and initially I was relieved because, OK, it's just a thread linking to photos of girls in glasses.
But it isn't as cute as I'm making it sound; they're talking about prescription strengths, too, and, uh. OK, I like glasses, I like people who wear glasses, and I quite possibly even avoid people who don't wear glasses, etc. But I don't think I could have imagined this kind of fetishism, and I mean, this is ME talking, I can pretty much dream up anything.
Anyway. I set the photo back to friends-n-family, all MCI-style.

I make passes at boys who wear glasses! But I'll talk to someone with 20/20 vision IF I HAVE TO
I am wearing my Batmobile Glasses in that photo! RIP, Batmobile Glasses. :(
Pressed for time -- sales reps are morons -- but I'm pro-glasses.
Well, not to *that* length, but you know what I mean.
I don't have any fetishes -- but glasses are as close as I get. I mean, it's not so much "I have some kind of weird sex thing about glasses" as "for a variety of reasons, I tend to be more comfortable around women who wear glasses, and also I find them aesthetically appealing". I mean, it's not a compulsion -- I am attracted to a number of women who don't wear glasses, and I don't find anything especially appealing about glasses in and of themselves (i.e. out of the context of someone's face). But I'd say I have a strong preference for them.
@Ben: I didn't realize that was ALL consumators until I saw the image I had posted for that contest. (the illustration of the boy with x-ray specs)
1. I like wearing glasses.
2. I like girls who wear glasses.
That out of the way -- this is the second time one of my friends has had this happen to them. IE, same forum, same creep-out factor from them linking to a girl's Flickr photos from there. Particularly creepy was when they were like "and don't leave creepy comments because then they wall them off to friends only."
The problem is not that people have glasses fetishes, I mean, whatever. Lots of people have fetishes. The issue is sort of the unintentional repurposing of people's otherwise normal photos as well, fetish objects. It just feels wrong and creepy.
Although I guess in principle I applaud celebrating people who wear glasses instead of forcing them into "traditional" aesthetics where glasses are considered lame.

This happens all the time in pop culture and sort of pisses me off.
Just... celebrate it non-creepily.
@adam Your friend Ian isn't quite as creepy now that Anne Hathaway is an old lady with no contractual obligation to Disney (AND HAS THEREFORE DONE NUDITY). But you're right: the real creep factor is that repurposing, just as you said. And thanks for pointing out the Ugly Duckling phenomenon in cinema. I know you know how much I hate that. @Branwell You are describing a really healthy appreciation for glasses, I think, and one that I share. @everyone I've almost finished my glasses 2008 campaign video.
