i need to create a 2 column "text and response" list in word, with the text on the left and response to that text to the right. how would i do that?

Sure -- use two columns of text (and be very careful about the vertical alignment so you don't confuse anyone.) Fixed-width font is recommended.
Also, importing from Excel works fairly well.
