Margarita mavens: what are some not-TOO-expensive (yet acceptable quality) tequilas for making margs? I'm not going to drink some hangover-inducing frat-guy swill, but I can't afford to continue drinking Patron Silver at recent consumption rates.

Technically, since you're making margaritas, you can use any tequila. My 93 year old Mexican grandmother makes some of the best margaritas I've ever tasted, and she uses the cheapest rotgut she can find. If you were sipping tequila straight (the way good tequila is supposed to be ingested) then yes, the good stuff is worth it. For mixing, anything will do.
srsly, I've even used cuervo when we make margaritas at family parties.
what's wrong with cuervo? i use that, and i've been told my margaritas are decent.

I mean, there's got to be some middle ground between the $57 stuff and the $17 stuff, right?
