Does a friend always give her/his honest opinion?
Replies
But what if your friend is doing something that is bad for them? For others?
Short of very hard drugs or plotting a murder...you can't stop them...for others...just enlist the others...people do sometimes listen to other people (friends) when they have a mob backing them up
In some cases no.
for instance, I will never tell someone how to act in a relationship or advertise the fact that I really don't like their SO, until they break up.
If they are doing something truly harmful to themselves, I will tell them the truth, but probably only if they ask or volunteer information.
Oh lord I hope not. BUT they do if they realise you are about to make a fool out of yourself.
The rule is
Be kind
Be honest
You do not sacrifice one for the other, but start with being kind, and stick with being honest.
There's also the wisdom of knowing when and when not to give you opinion.
@ Grey: thankfully, my friend is contemplating none of the above. Maybe I should leave it be.
@ Lady O: my opinion was asked for in this situation. I think that's what makes it harder.
@ Rabbit: this friend has a great potential for making a fool out of herself.
@ Superion: those are good words to live by. Thanks :)
Don't let her make a fool of herself. I always give good advice (especially romantic advice) in this regard, and the one time I needed someone to let me know I was being stupid no one came through. Be that someone.
Superion's got the right idea and this is how it's worked for me (with all my friends that have an ounce of sanity, that is): "I can tell you what you want to hear, and I can tell you what you need to hear- do you have any preference?"
No. Everything I say is a lie. Except for the times when I tell the truth. And chances are, during those times I'm telling the truth, I may only be doing so because it's more beliveable then a lie or takes less effort. Or i may be just imagining you naked.
@ Manuel: No
well, yes
accidentally
so no
it's a coincidence
or am i just picturing you naked?

Hell no...the honest friend is soon friend-less
